About Meatball Festival

Every summer, the Meatball Festival brings three evenings dedicated to one of the most beloved dishes of Campanian popular cuisine to Campigliano, a hamlet of San Cipriano Picentino in the province of Salerno. In Piazza Cesare Alfano, the Pro Loco stalls offer meatballs in tomato sauce, stuffed, meat-based, vegetarian, and even sweet versions, alongside pasta dishes, fried pizza, wines, and local products. Live music, shows, and activities for all ages complete a simple and welcoming village festival.

The Meatball Festival in Campigliano

In the heart of the Picentini Mountains, the Meatball Festival enlivens the hamlet of Campigliano every summer, in the municipality of San Cipriano Picentino, in the province of Salerno, Campania. For three consecutive evenings, the small Piazza Cesare Alfano transforms into an open-air kitchen dedicated to a dish as simple as it is iconic: the meatball, the absolute star of an event that, despite being relatively new, is already highly popular throughout the Picentini area.

A humble dish turned into a celebration

The meatball is a symbol of Southern Italian home cooking: it originated as a way to use leftovers, homemade, passed down from generation to generation, and prepared differently in every family. The festival starts from this very concept, offering a tasting journey that showcases all its possible variations without ever losing its signature homemade character. Every evening, volunteers from the Pro Loco and local associations prepare the meatballs according to local tradition, pairing them with local wines and regional products.

  • Classic meatballs in tomato sauce;
  • Stuffed meatballs;
  • Meat-based and vegetarian alternatives;
  • Gluten-free options, designed for those with specific dietary needs;
  • Sweet meatballs, such as chocolate and coconut.

The stalls and the table

Alongside meatballs in all their forms, the food stalls offer pasta dishes that incorporate the sauce, such as malloreddus with meatball sauce or cacio e pepe with meatballs, and traditional Campanian fried specialties like fried pizza stuffed with meatballs. The finale is left to local desserts, from zeppole to seasonal fruit. Prices remain intentionally popular: the festival was born as a community celebration rather than a gourmet showcase, and much of its charm lies in this simplicity.

Music, shows, and village atmosphere

The Meatball Festival is not just a culinary event. Every evening, with the opening of the stalls, the square hosts live music, shows, and activities designed for all ages, allowing families, groups of friends, and passing visitors to share a few hours of outdoor conviviality. It is the typical rhythm of the inland Salerno festivals: you arrive as the sun goes down, have dinner in the square, and stay until late at night listening to music in an intimate setting where everyone knows each other and outsiders are welcomed without formality.

Campigliano and the Picentini territory

Campigliano is one of the hamlets of San Cipriano Picentino, a hillside village overlooking the Sele plain and surrounded by chestnut and olive groves, at the gates of the Picentini Mountains Regional Park. The municipal area is known above all for the chestnut, celebrated for decades by another historic local event, and for a network of summer festivals that animate the hamlets one after another. Salerno and the coast are just a few kilometers away, making the festival an easy stop even for those spending their holidays on the coast who want to discover the province's hinterland.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco San Cipriano Picentino, in collaboration with local associations and with the direct involvement of the hamlet's inhabitants. Throughout the year, the Pro Loco organizes various events in the municipal area, from the Sagra delle Sagre dei Picentini to Carnival celebrations, and the Meatball Festival has quickly carved out its own space in the early July calendar.
