About May Tournament

Every May, Cuorgnè, in the heart of the Canavese region, transforms into a medieval court for the May Tournament at the Court of King Arduino. For two weekends, the historic streets come alive with costumed performers, beating drums, ancient taverns, and challenges between the seven city districts vying for the Palio. This popular festival, established in 1987, celebrates Arduino of Ivrea, the first King of Italy, and draws thousands of visitors each year to the town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont.

A medieval court in the heart of the Canavese

For two weekends in May, the historic center of Cuorgnè, a town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, steps back a thousand years to become the court of Arduino of Ivrea, considered the first King of Italy. The May Tournament at the Court of King Arduino is one of the most heartfelt and well-attended historical re-enactments in the Canavese area: streets and squares are filled with costumed characters, ladies and knights, flag-wavers, and, most importantly, the iconic beating drums that set the rhythm of the festival.

The challenge between the seven districts

At the heart of the event is the rivalry between the seven districts of the city—San Luigi, San Giovanni, San Giacomo, Ronchi-San Bernardo-Maddalena, San Faustino, San Rocco, and Sant'Anna—which compete throughout the tournament in a series of events to win the Palio, a banner painted each year by a local artist. The most popular trials include the Drum Competition, the spectacular Barrel Race, the Two Towers Tournament featuring historical armored fencing, and numerous other skill-based challenges that determine the final standings.

Taverns, medieval market, and shows

During the tournament evenings, the ancient taverns of the districts open their doors, offering traditional Canavese dishes in a convivial, festive atmosphere. A medieval market winds through the streets, featuring artisans and historical crafts, while the Arena Rex Imperi and the squares host historical and folk music concerts, fire shows, games, and entertainment. The historical pageant with hundreds of participants is the most scenic moment, accompanied by the driving rhythm of the drums.

A festival for the whole family

The final Sunday is dedicated to families and children, with a treasure hunt under the porticoes, educational workshops, and the Children's District, a space designed for the little ones. Between historical seminars, exhibitions, and book presentations dedicated to the figure of Arduino, the May Tournament combines popular entertainment with the preservation of local heritage.

Origins and tradition

Founded in 1987, the tournament is organized by the Pro Loco of Cuorgnè Tourist Association with the patronage of the Municipality, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Piedmont Region, and UNPLI Piedmont. Over the years, it has become a defining event for the entire Canavese area, capable of attracting over ten thousand visitors during the final weekend.
