The grand medieval re-enactment in Cuorgnè dedicated to Arduino, the first King of Italy
For two weekends in May, the historic center of Cuorgnè, a town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, steps back a thousand years to become the court of Arduino of Ivrea, considered the first King of Italy. The May Tournament at the Court of King Arduino is one of the most heartfelt and well-attended historical re-enactments in the Canavese area: streets and squares are filled with costumed characters, ladies and knights, flag-wavers, and, most importantly, the iconic beating drums that set the rhythm of the festival.
At the heart of the event is the rivalry between the seven districts of the city—San Luigi, San Giovanni, San Giacomo, Ronchi-San Bernardo-Maddalena, San Faustino, San Rocco, and Sant'Anna—which compete throughout the tournament in a series of events to win the Palio, a banner painted each year by a local artist. The most popular trials include the Drum Competition, the spectacular Barrel Race, the Two Towers Tournament featuring historical armored fencing, and numerous other skill-based challenges that determine the final standings.
During the tournament evenings, the ancient taverns of the districts open their doors, offering traditional Canavese dishes in a convivial, festive atmosphere. A medieval market winds through the streets, featuring artisans and historical crafts, while the Arena Rex Imperi and the squares host historical and folk music concerts, fire shows, games, and entertainment. The historical pageant with hundreds of participants is the most scenic moment, accompanied by the driving rhythm of the drums.
The final Sunday is dedicated to families and children, with a treasure hunt under the porticoes, educational workshops, and the Children's District, a space designed for the little ones. Between historical seminars, exhibitions, and book presentations dedicated to the figure of Arduino, the May Tournament combines popular entertainment with the preservation of local heritage.
Founded in 1987, the tournament is organized by the Pro Loco of Cuorgnè Tourist Association with the patronage of the Municipality, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Piedmont Region, and UNPLI Piedmont. Over the years, it has become a defining event for the entire Canavese area, capable of attracting over ten thousand visitors during the final weekend.
The 36th edition of the May Tournament at the Court of King Arduino took place in Cuorgnè over two weekends, from May 16 to 24, 2026, drawing over ten thousand visitors during the final weekend. This edition introduced several novelties: the Drum Competition was filmed with five cameras and broadcast live on LED walls in the square and via streaming, the San Giovanni District returned with its own tavern, the circuit was expanded with the closure of Via Milite Ignoto, and a new session was dedicated to female combat. The Palio of the Districts was won by the Sant'Anna District with 49 points.
Side events: conference and exhibition on witchcraft at the Trinità (first weekend), medieval banquet by reservation (second weekend), and presentation of the book «Arduino, i vescovi e la corona» by Davide Polcari.
Cuorgnè is located in the Canavese area, about 40 km north of Turin. By car: A5 Turin-Aosta motorway, exit at Scarmagno-Ivrea, then take the SP460 towards Cuorgnè. By train: Rivarolo Canavese station on the Turin-Pont Canavese line, with a connecting bus. During the tournament, a camper area is available at Ponte Vecchio, managed by the Camper Club La Granda.
Entry to the main days is ticketed: approximately 5 euros per day or 12 euros for a pass for the three final days. Tickets are available online and at the newsstand in the square. The exchange booths in Piazza Morgando and Via Parigi accept electronic payments only.
