The historic spring fair of San Martino in Rio, featuring a market, local food festival, and village celebration at the foot of the Este Castle.
The May Fair is the most cherished and anticipated event in San Martino in Rio, a small municipality in the Bassa Reggiana area, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in Emilia-Romagna. With a history rooted in the 19th century and now exceeding 150 editions, it is one of those village festivals that embody the identity of a community: for five days, the streets of the historic center, the expansive meadows of the Rocca Estense's public garden, and the surrounding streets fill with stalls, aromas, and music.
The focal point of the Fair is the Rocca Estense, the imposing castle that dominates the village and hosts exhibitions set up for the occasion each year. Around the Rocca, along Corso Umberto I and the streets of the center, unfolds the large market with exhibitors, traveling vendors, agricultural operators, hobbyists, and artisans showcasing their handmade creations. It is an event that blends the spirit of a local food festival with that of a traditional commercial fair.
The May Fair is not just a market: it's a packed schedule of initiatives designed for all ages. Among the recurring events are:
Organized by the Pro Loco San Martino in Rio with the support of the Municipality and local associations, the May Fair is the time when the San Martino community comes together and shares its story. Between the Cantina Sociale (winery cooperative), the CEPAM music school, the pastoral unit, and the many volunteers, the festival becomes a reflection of a territory that thrives on agriculture, engines, and conviviality. For those visiting the province of Reggio Emilia between late May and early June, it is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic Emilian village festival, far from the major tourist circuits but rich in warmth and tradition.
The 2026 edition of the May Fair animated San Martino in Rio for five days, from May 29 to June 2, with a program spread across the historic center and the Rocca Estense. From the Friday opening with AperiVino to the fireworks, the celebration brought together associations, volunteers, and thousands of visitors from the Bassa Reggiana region.
The May Fair is traditionally held straddling the last week of May and the first few days of June, with the main day on the last Sunday of the month.
