Open-air theatre in the village of Colleoli, Palaia
The Mauro Monni Popular Theatre Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in Palaia, a small town in the Province of Pisa nestled among the hills of the Valdera, in Tuscany. Every year, between late June and early July, the picturesque village of Colleoli โ a hamlet of Palaia and home to the Borgo di Colleoli Resort โ transforms into an open-air stage where local amateur companies perform comedies, dramas, and adapted classics.
The event was founded in 1998 in memory of Mauro Monni, a director who passed away during rehearsals for the play "La Bella Elvira". Since then, the festival has carried his name and preserved his spirit: accessible theatre, made by the people for the people, focusing on the passion of local troupes and their bond with the community. Over the years, performances have been held in various evocative locations, such as the abandoned village of Villa Saletta, before finding a permanent home in Colleoli.
The programme spans four evenings, with performances typically starting at 9:30 PM, when the setting sun gives the village a unique atmosphere. The lineup features a mix of brilliant comedies, dramas, and adaptations of famous texts, performed by groups such as the La Tartaruga company from Forcoli, the Four Red Roses from Castelfranco di Sotto, and other Tuscan theatrical ensembles. Ticket prices are affordable and modest, in keeping with the festival's spirit.
Attending performances in Colleoli is also the perfect opportunity to discover Palaia and its splendid medieval centre, with the Pieve di San Martino and panoramic views over the Valdera hills. The festival effectively kicks off the town's rich summer calendar, filled with musical events, concerts, and cultural initiatives that enliven the area until September.
The 28th edition of the Mauro Monni Popular Theatre Festival takes place from June 30 to July 5, 2026, in the setting of the Borgo di Colleoli Resort, in Palaia. As per tradition, the programme offers four evenings dedicated to Tuscan amateur theatre, with performances ranging from brilliant comedy to drama.

We recommend arriving a little early to find a seat and enjoy the village atmosphere at sunset. As these are evening outdoor performances, it is a good idea to bring a light jacket.
