Masked parades, music, and awards in the heart of the Maremma mining town
The Massa Marittima Carnival, also known as the Massetano Carnival, is one of the most cherished winter traditions in this town nestled in the heart of the Colline Metallifere in the Province of Grosseto, Tuscany. For a few days, the medieval historic center—dominated by the dramatic Piazza Garibaldi and the famous Cathedral of San Cerbone—transforms into a grand open-air stage where confetti, streamers, and masks take over the streets and squares.
The highlight of the event is the masked parade that winds through the town center. Participants gather in Piazza XXIV Maggio before setting off in a procession toward the main squares. This is where the real party begins, filled with music and entertainment, creating a festive atmosphere for all ages. The main festivities take place in Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Cavour, which are transformed into hubs of collective fun.
The most anticipated moment is the grand finale on Shrove Tuesday, when the most beautiful and original costumes are awarded. The jury, organized by the Centro Commerciale Naturale, presents three awards, each accompanied by a trophy:
The awards encourage creativity and attention to detail, drawing families, groups of friends, and associations who spend months crafting their costumes.
The Massa Marittima Carnival is a collaborative effort between local organizations. The events are promoted by four local associations in partnership with the Municipality of Massa Marittima: the Pro Loco, the Le Brutte Persone association, the La Casina di Babbo Natale association, and the Comitato Festeggiamenti San Bernardino. As noted by the municipal administration, the Carnival is a precious opportunity to enjoy the city's public spaces and strengthen the sense of community.
Attending the Carnival is the perfect excuse to explore one of the most fascinating villages in the Maremma. Massa Marittima, an ancient mining town rich in history and artistic treasures, offers visitors a stunning historic center filled with medieval palaces, museums, and artisan shops. The festival is free and open to everyone, making it particularly suitable for families with children who can enjoy the joyful Carnival atmosphere in the safe, pedestrianized squares of the center.
