The prose season at the Teatro San Francesco in Pescina
Marzo in Teatro is the prose season that brings the Teatro San Francesco in Pescina to life every year throughout March. Pescina is a small town in the Marsica area of the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. Launched in 2023, the festival reached its fourth edition in 2026, establishing itself as one of the most anticipated cultural events in the Marsica territory.
Pescina is the birthplace of the writer Ignazio Silone and Cardinal Giulio Mazzarino, and this strong cultural identity permeates the entire program. The season, under the artistic direction of Gabriele Ciaccia for the Notami association and supported by the Municipality of Pescina and the Ignazio Silone Study Center, weaves together major national theater with the local historical and literary roots.
The Marzo in Teatro schedule alternates between auteur prose, social storytelling, comedy, and live music. Over the years, renowned performers have graced the San Francesco stage, presenting shows that range from tributes to Abruzzese figures to musical theater, and from reflections on collective memory to variety shows.
The heart of the festival is the Teatro San Francesco, a symbolic space for Pescina's cultural life. Its hall welcomes audiences from across the Marsica region, turning every Saturday and Sunday in March into an opportunity to gather around the theater. The theater box office usually opens one hour before each performance.
More than just a theater season, Marzo in Teatro serves as a cultural hub for this inland area of Abruzzo, capable of attracting big names and offering the community high-quality theater. The festival helps keep Pescina's legacy as a city of culture alive, bridging literature, memory, and live performance.
