Three days of reflection and debate inspired by Benedetto Croce, held in Raiano in the Peligna Valley

The Raiano Philosophy Festival was established in 2022 as a flagship cultural event for the Municipality of Raiano, a small town in the Peligna Valley in the Abruzzo region. Every year, in early September, the town transforms into a laboratory of ideas: philosophers, university professors, psychologists, sociologists, and historians gather for public forums and round-table discussions, tackling core themes such as freedom, truth, identity, and the relationship between humanity and nature.
Raianoโs connection to philosophy is no coincidence. The great thinker Benedetto Croce, born in Pescasseroli, Abruzzo, spent the summers of his youth in Raiano between 1895 and 1913, staying at Casa Sagaria Rossi. This deep local bond is celebrated by the "Benedetto Croce and Abruzzo" Literary Park, of which the festival is one of the most vibrant initiatives. The organizing association, the Circolo Culturale Crociano, led by Giuliano Commito, draws inspiration from the philosopherโs life and work, preserving his legacy within the community that once welcomed him.
The festival goes beyond academic lectures: the program includes themed film screenings, educational meetings, and, most notably, nature walks that combine philosophical reflection with the experience of the outdoors. The most evocative route crosses the Gole di San Venanzio Nature Reserve, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the L'Aquila province, carved by the Aterno River just outside Raiano. It is the festival's way of bridging spirit and nature, thought and landscape, in keeping with the Peligna and Crocian traditions.
Since its inaugural edition in 2022, the Raiano Philosophy Festival has grown rapidly, attracting over four hundred participants from across Abruzzo. The main venue is located in the town center, specifically the modern "Giuseppe Arquilla" Multipurpose Hall on Via del Tratturo, at the entrance to Raiano. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality and offers free admission, cementing its status as a key cultural reference point for the Peligna Valley and the entire province of L'Aquila.
At this time, the Circolo Culturale Crociano has not yet announced the official dates or the theme for the upcoming Raiano Philosophy Festival. Past editions have consistently taken place in early September at the "Giuseppe Arquilla" Multipurpose Hall on Via del Tratturo, alternating between philosophical forums, round-table discussions with university professors, film screenings, and traditional nature walks in the Gole di San Venanzio Reserve.
The detailed program, including speakers and schedules, is typically released in the weeks leading up to the event through the channels of the "Benedetto Croce and Abruzzo" Literary Park and the Municipality of Raiano. This page will be updated as soon as the organizers release information regarding the 2026 edition.
Conferences are primarily held at the "Giuseppe Arquilla" Multipurpose Hall, located on Via del Tratturo at the entrance to Raiano (AQ), in the Peligna Valley.
Raiano is situated along the SS5 Tiburtina Valeria state road and has a train station on the Rome-Pescara line. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit), just a few kilometers from the town.
Admission to all events is free. The festival is organized by the Circolo Culturale Crociano association with the patronage of the Municipality of Raiano; program details are shared through the channels of the "Benedetto Croce and Abruzzo" Literary Park and the Municipality.
