Carnival in the baroque heart of the Itria Valley
The Martina Franca Baroque Carnival is the annual celebration that paints the historic center of Martina Franca—an elegant city in the province of Taranto nestled in the heart of the Itria Valley—in vibrant colors. The scenic streets and squares of the old town, famous for their stunning baroque architecture, become the natural stage for a popular event that blends costumes, music, street performances, and entertainment for all ages.
The festival is promoted by the Terra Martinae del Castrum Vetus cultural association, which is dedicated to preserving local traditions and the Martinese dialect, with the patronage of the Municipality of Martina Franca and the collaboration of various local groups. In just a few years, the Martina Franca Baroque Carnival has become a highly anticipated date on the city's winter calendar, drawing families, children, and curious visitors into the heart of the ancient city.
The program offers a variety of events over several days: masquerade parades and mascot processions that enliven the historic center, live entertainment featuring clown cabaret, magic, fire shows, and juggling, as well as workshops designed for the little ones. Artistic displays, lights, and selfie spots decorate the streets of the village, turning Martina Franca into a festive open-air stage.
The family-oriented atmosphere is a hallmark of the event: alongside the public square festivities, there are activities specifically for children, such as costumed reading sessions at the Community Library. It is a Carnival designed to be experienced together, celebrating play, colorful costumes, and the rediscovery of Apulian folk traditions.
Experiencing the Martina Franca Baroque Carnival is also the perfect opportunity to discover one of the jewels of Puglia: the historic center of Martina Franca, with its Basilica of San Martino, the Ducal Palace, and whitewashed alleys, provides a unique backdrop for the festivities. Surrounded by the trulli and vineyards of the Itria Valley, the city perfectly blends the charm of its architectural heritage with the vibrancy of a community celebration.
