The European festival of music schools between Comacchio and its Lidos
Mare di Musica is the Festival of Music Schools that enlivens Comacchio, in the Province of Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna every June. Born in 2018 with just a hundred musicians, it has grown year by year to become a benchmark event for youth music education in Italy and Europe, capable of attracting hundreds of students, teachers, and groups from numerous music schools.
The event is promoted by Assonanza and the Civica Scuola di Musica di Comacchio (Comacchio Civic Music School), in collaboration with AIdSM (Italian Association of Music Schools), and is under the artistic direction of Giorgio Borgatti. More than just a simple concert program, it is a great moment of community with high educational and pedagogical value, where young people play, interact, and grow together.
During the festival, the entire lagoon city and its Lidos transform into a large open-air stage. Concerts and performances move between the symbolic places of Comacchio – especially the scenic Trepponti staircase and the Museo del Delta Antico (Ancient Delta Museum) – and the seaside resorts on the coast: Lido di Spina, Lido degli Estensi, Lido di Pomposa, and Lido degli Scacchi.
The days are marked by live performances, workshops, labs, and in-depth sessions dedicated to both students and music enthusiasts. Among the most evocative events are the dawn concerts on the beaches, with the audience listening to music as the sun rises, and the grand evenings under the stars in the heart of 'Little Venice'.
Mare di Musica involves schools associated with EMU (European Music School Union), giving thousands of young musicians the opportunity to perform, play together, and meet peers from other countries. Orchestras, youth bands, choirs, and small ensembles take turns on the numerous stages, covering classical, jazz, pop, and contemporary repertoires.
The event represents a significant strategic and cultural opportunity for the Emilia-Romagna Region: it combines education with tourism, bringing a young and international audience to the coast while simultaneously enhancing the historical and landscape heritage of Comacchio and the Po Delta.
The 2026 edition of Mare di Musica takes place in Comacchio and its Lidos from June 11 to 15, 2026. The formula that has made the festival famous is confirmed: five days of performances, training, and ensemble music that transform the lagoon city into a large, widespread stage.
The protagonist schools are those associated with EMU (European Music School Union), which will bring thousands of young musicians to Comacchio. As stated by the president of AIdSM, Mirco Besutti, it is "an unmissable event of great strategic and cultural value for the Emilia-Romagna Region and for our country." The artistic direction is entrusted to Giorgio Borgatti.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the concert schedule, times, and the list of participating schools and ensembles, will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Based on past editions, the five days (June 11-15) include training activities and ensemble rehearsals on the first days, followed by a packed schedule of concerts spread throughout the historic center of Comacchio (particularly the Trepponti staircase and the Museo del Delta Antico) and the Lidos (Spina, Estensi, Pomposa, Scacchi), with the now traditional evening performances under the stars and the evocative dawn concerts on the beach.
Comacchio can be reached by car from the A13 Bologna-Padova motorway (Ferrara Sud or Ferrara Nord exit) and then via the Ferrara-Mare expressway (SS309 Romea) towards the Lidos. The nearest train station is Ferrara, connected to Comacchio and the Lidos by bus lines. In summer, shuttle services operate between the historic center and the seaside resorts.
The performances are spread throughout the historic center of Comacchio and the Lidos and are generally open to the public.
