About Cultural Membranes

Cultural Membranes is the concert series that in 2026 arrives at the Abbey of Pomposa, in Codigoro (FE), on the occasion of the celebrations for the Millennium of the consecration of the Church of Santa Maria. Five free events, from May to October, entrusted to the chamber groups of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra founded by Riccardo Muti, held in the Refectory Hall and the Stilate Hall.

Cultural Membranes at the Abbey of Pomposa

After the editions launched in 2023 in the museum spaces of Emilia-Romagna, in 2026 the Cultural Membranes series arrives at the Abbey of Pomposa, in the Municipality of Codigoro, in the Province of Ferrara. The program runs from May to October and accompanies the celebrations of the Millennium of the consecration of the Church of Santa Maria, one of the most important Benedictine monuments in Emilia-Romagna and in the entire Italian Romanesque landscape.

The title of the series recalls the biological principle of osmosis: just as there is a continuous exchange between the inside and the outside in cell membranes, so the cultural space functions as a permeable surface, crossed by flows of time, sensitivity, and artistic languages. Bringing great music into a historic site means making it alive and participatory.

The protagonists: the chamber groups of the Cherubini Orchestra

The protagonists of the concerts are the chamber groups of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, founded by Riccardo Muti in 2004, based between Piacenza and Ravenna and composed of young musicians from every Italian region. String quartets, quintets, and trios take turns in the abbey's halls with a repertoire that spans epochs and styles: from classical to baroque, from romanticism to contemporary music.

The concert venues

The concerts are held within the monumental complex, between the Sala del Refettorio (Refectory Hall) and the Sala delle Stilate (Stilate Hall) of the Pomposian Museum. Listening to chamber music in the settings of the ancient monastery creates a direct dialogue between architectural heritage, medieval frescoes, and new artistic experiences.

Free admission

All events are free admission and do not require booking, subject to availability. The series is organized by the Regional Directorate of National Museums Emilia-Romagna - National Museums of Bologna, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, with the aim of transforming state cultural spaces into lively, accessible places open to the city.
