The Mazzarino Carnival featuring allegorical floats, masquerade groups, and open-air dancing
The Maktorion Carnival is the grand carnival celebration of Mazzarino, a town in the Sicilian hinterland within the Free Municipal Consortium of Caltanissetta, Sicily. During the most joyful days of the year, the town transforms into an open-air stage filled with allegorical floats, masquerade groups, music, and vibrant colors. It is an event deeply rooted in the community, drawing families, children, and visitors from neighboring towns to the square.
The name of the event is no coincidence: Maktorion (in Ancient Greek ฮฮฑฮบฯฯฯฮนฮฟฮฝ) is the ancient toponym from which the very name of Mazzarino derives, via the form Mazaris. It was an indigenous Hellenized center in the area, linked to the history of Gela. By naming the Carnival after this, the organizers connect the contemporary festival to the city's most ancient roots, giving it a recognizable and proudly local identity.
The heart of the Maktorion Carnival lies in the parades of allegorical floats and masquerade groups. The floats, built in the preceding months, parade along the main street amidst colorful costumes, choreography, and plenty of music. The procession traditionally starts from the Canalaro district and crosses the city to reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where the most anticipated moments take place, featuring performances, award ceremonies, and festivities late into the night.
Alongside the parades, the festival offers tastings of typical local products, dancing and music under the stars, entertainment shows, and cabaret. In the evening, the square comes alive with live music and DJ sets, turning the Carnival into a great social gathering for the entire Mazzarino community.
The Maktorion Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco of Mazzarino together with a dedicated Carnival committee, which coordinates the construction of the floats, group registrations, and the daily program each year. Participation in the street parades is free and open to all.
The 2026 Maktorion Carnival brought Mazzarino to life from February 15 to 17, 2026. The festival opened on Carnival Sunday with the first parade of allegorical floats, which started from the Canalaro district and continued along the main street to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, accompanied by masquerade groups and their choreography. The grand finale on Shrove Tuesday featured a major parade of scenic floats and masquerade groups, with colorful costumes, live music, and the final award ceremony.
Throughout the days: tastings of typical local products, music and dancing in the square, entertainment shows, and cabaret.
The Carnival takes place in the center of Mazzarino (CL), Sicily: the parade starts from the Canalaro district and travels along the main street to Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
By car from Caltanissetta or Gela, following the inland roads towards Mazzarino; the reference railway station for the area is Caltanissetta, with onward travel by car or bus.
Access to the parades and events in the square is free.
