Maggio Teatino: Chieti's cultural celebration

Maggio Teatino is the flagship cultural festival of Chieti, the provincial capital of the Abruzzo region. Promoted by the Municipality of Chieti in collaboration with local associations, parishes, schools, and cultural institutions, the event is rooted in the celebrations for the patron saint, San Giustino, held on May 11th. It unfolds through a dense calendar of events that stretches far beyond a single month, covering the entire spring season through to early summer.

A widespread, multidisciplinary programme

The hallmark of Maggio Teatino is its widespread and multidisciplinary nature: dozens of events take place in the city's iconic landmarks, from the Teatro Marrucino to the Museo Costantino Barbella, from the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo at Villa Frigerj to the Villa Comunale, and even Piazza San Giustino and the historic palaces of the city centre. The programme ranges from music and theatre (including dialect performances) to book presentations, exhibitions, children's workshops, conferences, guided tours, markets, and sporting events.

Music, literature, and folk traditions

Music is at the heart of the festival, featuring free concerts in the historic squares, jazz performances, and evenings dedicated to singer-songwriters. In recent years, Maggio Teatino has also integrated its calendar with the Maggio dei Libri (May of Books), the national campaign for reading promotion, as part of Chieti's recognition as a City that Reads. The festival also highlights local folk traditions, such as the Palio de lu Ricchiappe, and re-enactments of the ancient history of Theate Marrucinorum, the ancient Italic city from which Chieti originates.

With most events free of charge and a focus on revitalising public spaces in the city centre, Maggio Teatino has established itself as one of the most anticipated cultural highlights of the Abruzzo spring, attracting audiences from across the Chieti province and the entire region. The festival blends religious and civic identity linked to the patron saint, San Giustino, with a broad, inclusive cultural offering designed for all ages.
