The patronal feast of Conversano: faith, tradition, and spectacle
The Madonna Santissima della Fonte is the protector of Conversano and the entire diocese of Conversano-Monopoli, in the Province of Bari. Her patronal feast is the most anticipated event of the year for this town in the Apulian hinterland, famous for its Aragonese castle, Romanesque cathedral, and countryside dotted with cherry orchards. For weeks, between late April and early June, the town is transformed: the streets of the historic center are adorned with artistic illuminations, squares host concerts and shows, and the faithful arrive from across the diocese to pay homage to the Virgin.
The heart of the festival remains its spiritual dimension. The religious calendar, organized by the Maria SS. della Fonte Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the Cathedral and the diocese, features solemn celebrations, novenas, pilgrimages, and moments of collective prayer. The most awaited event is the procession of the sacred icon of the Madonna della Fonte, which travels through the city streets in a long parade of people: a moment of contemplation and devotion that draws thousands of visitors every year. The rites conclude at the Tempietto della Madonna della Fonte, a symbolic site of local worship.
Alongside the liturgy, Conversano experiences its great popular festival. Piazza Castello becomes the main stage, featuring free concerts by singer-songwriters and folk musicians, comedy shows, performances by local brass bands, and musical evenings along Corso Domenico Morea. There is no shortage of artistic illuminations, fireworks, the traditional release of the hot-air balloon, and sports tournaments that animate the town. During the same period, the Cherry Festival often takes place, celebrating the signature fruit of the Conversano area with tastings, markets, and pomological exhibitions.
The Madonna della Fonte Festival is more than just a religious event: it is the moment when the entire community of Conversano reconnects with its identity, bridging the sacred and the profane, peasant tradition and spectacle. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful villages in central Puglia, just a few kilometers from Bari and the Adriatic coast, immersed in the authentic atmosphere of a Southern Italian patronal feast.
The 2026 edition offered a particularly rich calendar, spread over more than a month of events from May 1st to June 2nd. The chosen theme, «Mary, source and spring of fraternity», was linked to the Jubilee Year and the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi.
The spiritual dimension spanned the entire month with solemn celebrations, moments of prayer, and meditative concerts, including an organ and vocal concert in the church of San Benedetto. The most anticipated moment remained the procession of the icon of the Madonna della Fonte through the city streets. On the civic side, the highlight was concentrated between May 30th and June 2nd, with Piazza Castello taking center stage for the performances.
Among the year's novelties was the 1st «Corri per Maria» Trophy, a road race dedicated to the patron saint, alongside consolidated traditions: artistic illuminations, fireworks, the hot-air balloon release, the 52nd «Madonna della Fonte» 5-a-side Football Tournament, and musical evenings on Corso Morea.
Theme of the edition: «Mary, source and spring of fraternity». Calendar extended over more than a month, with the highlight from May 30th to June 2nd.
