The pilgrimage on the Tuesday after Easter to the rock hermitage of Castel di Ieri
The Madonna di Pietrabona Festival is among the most ancient and deeply felt religious traditions of the village of Castel di Ieri, a small town in the Valle Subequana in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Every year, on the Tuesday following Easter, the community gathers in a procession to reach the rock hermitage of the Madonna di Pietrabona, a sanctuary literally swallowed by the greenery and carved into the mountain rock.
The origins of this devotion have been documented since 1183, when the site appeared in the papal bulls of Lucius III, later confirmed by Clement III (1188) and Honorius III (1223). Recent studies suggest that an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the Dea Bona—a deity associated with herbs, the earth, healing, and fertility—once stood on the site: a syncretism that makes this festival a living bridge between Christian spirituality and ancestral memory.
According to local tradition, a farmer escaped a dangerous flood thanks to the intervention of the Madonna, who appeared to him sitting on a rock: the pietra buona (good stone) that would give the sanctuary its name. Since then, the hermitage has been a destination for pilgrimages and a center of Marian veneration for the entire Valle Subequana.
The highlight of the festival is the procession that, on the morning of Easter Tuesday, departs from the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and heads into the woods along a path of about four kilometers, crossing the dense vegetation of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park until it reaches the hermitage, where Holy Mass is celebrated. At the end of the services, it is tradition to stop and share lunch near the sanctuary in a festive, communal atmosphere.
The Madonna di Pietrabona Hermitage Sanctuary stands in a small gorge between Castel di Ieri and Goriano Sicoli, in the Rio Scuro area. The church, with its barrel vault and frescoed walls, is built on a rocky terrace between stone walls: it includes a hermitage carved into the rock, an underground cave, and an unusual painting of the Virgin that bears witness to the layering of cults over the centuries.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco La Torre association together with the Municipality of Castel di Ieri and local groups, who in recent years have made the event increasingly inclusive. Thanks to joelettes—special trekking wheelchairs—even people with motor disabilities can tackle the trails and reach the hermitage safely, in the spirit of a millennial journey that is truly "for everyone".
Monday, April 6: 10:00 AM Holy Mass in front of the Church of the Madonna del Soccorso; 5:30 PM Vespers at the Madonna di Pietrabona Hermitage church.
Tuesday, April 7: 9:00 AM departure of the procession from the Church of Santa Maria Assunta; 11:00 AM celebration of Holy Mass at the Hermitage; 4:30 PM return of the procession to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
The novelty of 2026 was the accessibility guaranteed to people with motor disabilities through the use of joelettes, as part of the "Cammino Grande di Celestino - Un Cammino di Tutti" project, with the involvement of the L'Incontro Community Cooperative, the Pro Loco La Torre, and the Municipality of Castel di Ieri.
Castel di Ieri is located in the Valle Subequana, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached from the A25 motorway (Cocullo or Pratola Peligna exit), continuing towards the valley. The hermitage is about 4 km from the town center and can only be reached on foot along the trail.
Comfortable clothing and hiking shoes are recommended, as the route crosses woods and mountain paths with an elevation gain of about 100 meters. For people with motor disabilities, accompaniment with a joelette is available upon reservation.
Pro Loco La Torre — tel. +39 346 3207741 — email [email protected]. Guided tours of the hermitage are available by reservation throughout the year.
