The patronal feast of Grumo Appula in honor of Maria SS. di Monteverde
The Madonna di Monteverde Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year in Grumo Appula, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia. Dedicated to Maria Santissima di Monteverde, the city's patron saint, the festival has for generations united religious and civil life into one great community moment, drawing in worshippers, returning emigrants, and visitors from nearby towns.
The spiritual core of the festival is the veneration of the Madonna's effigy, kept in the sanctuary of Monteverde. The preparation begins days in advance with the transfer of the effigy and the novena, culminating in the solemn procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by brass bands and a parade of the faithful. It is the moment when all of Grumo Appula spills into the streets, amidst decorations, illuminations, and the scent of market stalls.
Alongside the religious rites, the civil program transforms Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the town streets into a large open-air stage. Brass bands, cover bands, and musical evenings alternate over several days, with impressive firework displays serving as one of the most spectacular and beloved moments of the festival. There is no shortage of traditional artistic illuminations and stalls selling sweets and local products, which bring the center to life until late at night.
Organized by the Santa Maria di Monteverde Parish together with the Patronal Feast Committee, the festival is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the occasion where the Grumo community recognizes its roots, celebrates its identity, and renews a bond of faith and belonging passed down for centuries. For those visiting Apulia during this period, it is an authentic immersion into the folklore and popular devotion of Southern Italy.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna di Monteverde Patronal Feast in Grumo Appula kicks off on Thursday, May 21, with the transfer of the Madonna's effigy, a moment that opens the path of spiritual preparation. The heart of the festivities is concentrated in the last weekend of May and the first days of June, amidst devotion, music, and popular tradition, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the historic center.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Grumo Appula (BA), with its epicenter in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the Mother Church, and the sanctuary of the Madonna di Monteverde.
