The Madonna di Cotrino Festival is the most anticipated religious and popular event of the year in Latiano, in the province of Brindisi, in the heart of the Apulian Salento. Every year, in the first days of May, the entire community gathers around the venerated image of the Virgin, the city's patron saint, in a succession of sacred rites and festive moments that involve the Santa Maria della Neve Mother Church, the Sanctuary of Cotrino, and the main squares of the historic center.
The origins of this devotion date back to the 17th century. According to tradition, in April 1605, the Virgin appeared to a young pilgrim, pointing out the place known as Cotrino where an image of her was hidden: a Byzantine-style fresco found on a wall covered in brambles. Bishop Lucio Fornari, with a bull dated March 9, 1606, officially established the liturgical feast, sealing the deep bond between Latiano and its Madonna. Still today, next to the ancient sanctuary that houses the precious fresco, a new and spacious sanctuary stands as a destination for pilgrimages.
The program alternates between sacred and secular according to a consolidated ritual. The festival opens with Holy Mass at the Mother Church and the evocative pilgrimage procession that accompanies the statue of the Virgin to the Sanctuary of Cotrino, where an all-night Marian vigil is held. The following day, celebrations at the sanctuary culminate in the return procession to Latiano, while in the evening Piazza Umberto I hosts musical performances and orchestras. The solemn day is marked by the Pontifical Mass presided over by the Bishop of Oria, band concerts, and the grand city procession along the traditional route, which concludes late in the evening with a fireworks display.
As is typical of the best patronal festivals in Salento, the streets of the center light up with artistic luminarie (light displays), while brass bands and grand concert bands attract music enthusiasts from all over Puglia. The event, organized by the Madonna di Cotrino Patronal Festival Committee with the support of the parish and the citizenry, is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of Latiano and the spirituality that has linked the town to its Virgin for over four centuries.
Located between Mesagne, Oria, and Francavilla Fontana, Latiano is an agricultural town known for its wine, olive oil, and rural traditions. The Madonna di Cotrino festival represents the moment when this territory best expresses its faith and sense of community, offering visitors to Puglia an authentic experience of popular devotion.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna di Cotrino Festival in Latiano is expected, as per tradition, in the first days of May. At the current date, the Madonna di Cotrino Patronal Festival Committee has not yet published the official dates or the detailed program of the festivities.
Based on custom, the program is expected to include the evening pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Cotrino, solemn services at the Mother Church, the city procession, band concerts in Piazza Umberto I, and traditional fireworks. The final program will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Latiano is located in the province of Brindisi, along the state road 7 (Via Appia) between Mesagne and Oria. By car, it can be reached via the Brindisi-Taranto expressway. The Latiano train station is served by regional lines; the nearest airports are Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
The rites are concentrated between the Santa Maria della Neve Mother Church, the Sanctuary of Cotrino (in the open countryside, reachable by procession or car), and Piazza Umberto I for civil events.
Participation in celebrations, processions, and square performances is free and open to all.
For the evening pilgrimage to the sanctuary, comfortable clothing and suitable shoes are recommended. During the festival days, the center is closed to traffic during the processions.
