About Madonna delle Rose

Every May, the town of Piglio gathers around the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Rose for one of the most heartfelt festivals in the Ciociaria region. Originating from a 1656 vowโ€”when dried roses at the feet of a 15th-century fresco of the Virgin Mary reportedly bloomed again during a plagueโ€”the festival combines religious processions and solemn masses with three evenings of popular music in the square, culminating in fireworks and a traditional raffle. It is an event that blends ancient faith with village cheer.

A festival born from a 1656 vow

The Madonna delle Rose Festival is the most iconic event in the town of Piglio, a village nestled in the Ernici Mountains in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region and the Lazio area. Its roots go back to 1656, the year a violent plague struck central Italy. Local tradition tells that in a chapel outside the town walls, roses that had long since dried up at the feet of a 15th-century fresco of the Virgin suddenly bloomed again. From that moment, the contagion halted, ceasing completely on October 30th of that year. To fulfill their vow, the people of Piglio built the Marian Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Rose between 1668 and 1674, which still houses the fresco today and remains the center of all local devotion.

The religious heart: procession and the statuette

In the days leading up to the festival, a small statue of the Virgin, affectionately called la statuetta, is carried from house to house so that every family can pray before her: a domestic ritual that involves the entire village and prepares the community for the solemnity. The most anticipated moment is the procession, accompanied by festive bell-ringing, blank shots, and the Piglio town band, which winds through the historic center with local confraternities, clergy, and civil authorities. This devotion is renewed every October 30th, when the wooden statue is carried in procession from the Collegiate Church back to the Sanctuary to commemorate the end of the plague.

Three evenings of music in the square

Alongside the religious observances, the festival has developed a popular program of entertainment over the years, organized by the Piglio Merchants' Committee. Every evening from 9:00 PM, the stage hosts orchestras and bands ranging from 1970s and 80s disco to classic Neapolitan songs and the choral harmonies of local vocal ensembles. It is a program designed for all generations, with the public gathering in the square after the services to dance, sing, and socialize until late at night.

Fireworks and raffle

  • Fireworks display on the final evening, the traditional seal on the festivities
  • Raffle draw, an unmissable event that closes the festival
  • Stalls and markets along the streets of the center, featuring sweets and local products
  • Activities and moments dedicated to children

Piglio, the village of Cesanese

Those arriving for the festival also discover a town that is one of the wine capitals of Lazio: Piglio gives its name to Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, the first wine in the Lazio region to receive the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin. Perched over 600 meters above sea level among vineyards and forests, the village preserves a medieval historic center, a fortress, and panoramic views over the Sacco Valley. Combining participation in the festival with a stop at a winery or a local trattoria is the best way to understand the soul of this corner of Ciociaria.

An opportunity to discover Ciociaria

The Madonna delle Rose Festival is not a tourist re-enactment: it is a living tradition that draws thousands of people to Piglio every May, including residents, emigrants returning for the occasion, and visitors from neighboring towns. Those who attend find a rare balance between religious reflection and collective joy, with the setting of the Sanctuary and the Ernici mountains as a backdrop. For the province of Frosinone, it represents one of the most significant spring events, capable of telling the story, faith, and conviviality of an entire community in just three days.
