The September festival in the mining town of Grotte, blending faith, processions, and a livestock fair

In the heart of south-central Sicily, perched among the ancient sulfur mines of the Agrigento hinterland, the small town of Grotte (province of Agrigento, Sicily region) celebrates one of its most cherished traditions every year: the Madonna delle Grazie Festival. It is a celebration that weaves religious devotion with the rural traditions of a town that, for generations, lived off the labor of the sulfur mines.
The focal point of the festivities is the small rural church of Madonna delle Grazie, located on the outskirts of town along the road of the same name. The original votive chapel was built in the open countryside and later expanded by the heirs of the Spoto family, eventually becoming the small church now managed by the Beata Vergine Maria del Monte Carmelo parish. It is an intimate space, too small to accommodate all the faithful on the day of the festival, which is why the most crowded celebrations take place outdoors in the square in front.
The most anticipated moment is the procession. On Saturday, the statue of the Madonna is carried amidst songs and prayers from the Madonna del Carmelo church to the rural chapel; on the main day, following the Eucharistic celebration, the statue travels through the main streets of the center—from Piazza Umberto I to Piazza Marconi and up to Viale della Vittoria—accompanied by the brass band, choirs, and civil authorities. In some years, the evening candlelight procession is dedicated to prayers for peace.
The festival preserves ancient and evocative customs: families decorate their balconies with white blankets draped over the windowsills as a sign of joy, while the streets are lit up with illuminated arches. On Sunday morning, the historic livestock fair takes place, a legacy of the area's agricultural and pastoral roots. In the evening, the square comes alive with musical shows and live concerts, bringing the day to a festive close.
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival traditionally falls on the third Sunday of September, with civil and religious festivities extending over the preceding weeks. Not to be confused with the liturgical feast of the same Madonna, which is celebrated at the beginning of July with a three-day prayer. For those visiting the Agrigento hinterland at the end of summer, it is an opportunity to discover the authentic Sicily of small towns, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
Details for the 2026 edition of the Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Grotte have not yet been released. Based on established tradition, the festivities should focus around the third Sunday of September, following the usual format: procession of the statue from the Madonna del Carmelo church to the rural chapel, livestock fair, street decorations with illuminated arches, and evening shows in Piazza Umberto I.
The detailed program — dates, mass times, any concerts, and sporting initiatives — will be published by the Beata Vergine Maria del Monte Carmelo parish in the weeks leading up to the festival. Check back on this page for updates.
Grotte is located in the province of Agrigento, along the SS 122 road that connects Agrigento to Caltanissetta. By car, it is about 25 km from the provincial capital, Agrigento. The nearest train station with good connections is Agrigento Centrale, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The celebrations are concentrated between the Madonna del Carmelo church, the small rural Madonna delle Grazie church (outskirts, on the road of the same name), and Piazza Umberto I for evening shows.
Participation in the festival, the procession, and the shows in the square is free.
September in Sicily still offers summer temperatures: bring water and a hat for the morning livestock fair. Evenings can be cooler.
