Popular devotion, processions, and a traditional fair in Giuggianello, in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, during the final days of May, the village of Giuggianello, in the heart of lower Salento in the province of Lecce, gathers around the venerated image of the Madonna della Serra. It is one of the community's most heartfelt celebrations, blending religious and civil dimensions: a procession, liturgical services, illuminations, live concerts, and a traditional fair transform the small town into a meeting point for residents and visitors from neighboring areas.
The cult is linked to the picturesque chapel of Madonna della Serra, which stands isolated among ancient olive trees along the road connecting Giuggianello to Minervino di Lecce, at the foot of the hill known as the "Serra." The building bears an inscription on its architrave dating its construction to 1615, and it was restored in 1996 thanks to the efforts of the local population. According to popular tradition, an ancient fresco depicting the Virgin and Child was discovered at the foot of the hill in an unspecified era; it was later placed on the sanctuary's altar and has been venerated as the Madonna della Serra ever since.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the procession: the statue of the Madonna is carried by the faithful through the streets of the village, along a route that connects the mother church of Sant'Antonio Abate to the place of worship on the Serra. The procession, accompanied by a brass band and devotional chants, renews a rite of "rural simplicity" passed down from generation to generation, in which the community of Giuggianello rediscovers its farming roots and spiritual identity.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival preserves its historic fair, an occasion for exchange and gathering typical of Salento villages. Among the stalls, you can find:
The evenings are enlivened by live concerts and musical performances, while illuminations light up the town center, creating the festive atmosphere typical of Salento's patronal feasts.
Located in the Apulia Region, the town of Giuggianello is one of the smallest in the province of Lecce, famous for its landscape of olive trees, dry-stone walls, and the presence of dolmens, menhirs, and ancient megaliths scattered throughout the surrounding countryside. The Madonna della Serra Feast and Fair represents a strong moment of identity for the town, where Marian devotion intertwines with rural memory and the popular tradition of lower Salento. For those visiting the area, it is an authentic opportunity to get to know the community life of a Salento village far from the major tourist flows.
The festival traditionally takes place in the final days of May. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the detailed program is usually released in the weeks prior by the Municipality of Giuggianello and the parish. We recommend following the official municipal channels to find out the dates, procession times, and musical program as soon as they become available.
