The nocturnal procession of Our Lady of Sorrows during Holy Week in Casamicciola Terme

The Madonna della Notte is among the most profound and ancient expressions of popular devotion in Casamicciola Terme, a town on the island of Ischia in the Province of Naples, Campania. Every year, in the heart of Holy Week, the community gathers for a procession that is anything but spectacular, focusing instead on intimacy: in the silence of the night, before the Good Friday sun rises, the statue of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows leaves the Congrega di Santa Maria della Pietà to traverse the village streets.
The procession is held in the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The image of the Virgin of Sorrows remains in the Congrega until the early hours of the morning, when at approximately 3:30 AM it is carried on shoulders along a route that touches the heart of the town: Corso Luigi Manzi, Piazza Marina, Perrone, San Pasquale, Piazza Bagni, and Corso Garibaldi, before returning to the parish church. The unusual hour, in the middle of the night, gives the rite its unique character: the soft lights, the faces of the faithful, and the Latin chants accompanying the statue through the narrow alleys.
For the people of Casamicciola, the Madonna della Notte is much more than a religious function. The Virgin with her sorrowful face is felt as "their light and their Mother in the darkest moments," and the procession becomes a moment of recognition of their roots, cultural identity, and sense of community. Both believers and non-believers, young and old, participate in this ancestral rite that transcends divisions and brings the entire town together.
Witnessing the Madonna della Notte procession means stepping quietly into a night made of contemplation and collective memory. Those visiting Casamicciola Terme during Holy Week discover an authentic side of the island of Ischia, far from the beaches and spas, made of ancient songs, sleeping streets, and a devotion passed down from generation to generation.
Good Friday 2026 falls on April 3: the Madonna della Notte procession therefore takes place in the night between April 2 and 3, according to the usual Casamicciola custom. Departure is expected around 3:30 AM from the Congrega di Santa Maria della Pietà, with the return to the parish church after the traditional route through the town streets.
Details regarding times and the route are usually communicated by the parish and the Congrega in the days leading up to Holy Week.
