About Madonna della Luce

Every February 16th, Ugento, in the heart of Salento (Lecce province), celebrates the Madonna della Luce Festival, one of the most cherished Marian devotions in lower Salento. The event commemorates the 1563 miracle, when a blind priest regained his sight before a Byzantine fresco of the Virgin. On the feast day, the statue of the Madonna leaves the 16th-century Sanctuary and travels through the town streets in a solemn procession, accompanied by a brass band and the faithful, to the Cathedral of the Assumption, before returning to the Sanctuary in a suggestive candlelight parade.

An ancient Marian devotion in the heart of Salento

The Madonna della Luce Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in Ugento, a town in the Province of Lecce, in the Apulian lower Salento. Every year, on February 16th, the community gathers around the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Luce to honor a sacred image linked to one of the area's most famous Marian miracles.

The miracle of 1563

Tradition tells that in 1563, a blind priest, Father Didaco di Vittorio of Afragola, while on a pilgrimage to Santa Maria di Leuca, sought shelter from a storm among the ruins of an ancient rural chapel, destroyed during the Saracen raids of 1537. While praying to the Virgin, he suddenly regained his sight, and the first thing he saw was a Byzantine fresco of the Madonna, unearthed by his dog. From that episode, the image took the name Madonna della Luce (Our Lady of the Light), and the current Sanctuary was built on the site between 1576 and 1588.

The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Luce is a late-Renaissance temple with Baroque influences: a facade framed by sturdy corner pilasters, a 1588 Lecce stone portal, and a central rose window. The interior, with a single nave and a lunetted barrel vault, preserves nineteen 17th-century frescoes and, on the high altar, the ancient Byzantine fresco of the Virgin. On the walls, inscriptions and graffiti left by pilgrims between the 17th and 19th centuries are still visible, a testament to an uninterrupted devotion. Today, the Sanctuary serves as a subsidiary church to the Cathedral Parish of the Assumption in Ugento.

The procession

The central moment of the festival is the solemn procession. On February 16th, the statue of the Madonna leaves the Sanctuary and, accompanied by the music of the band and a crowd of faithful in prayer and song, travels through the streets of the historic center to the Cathedral of the Assumption, where Holy Mass is celebrated. At the end, the procession escorts the image back to the Sanctuary in a suggestive candlelight parade, symbolically evoking the light of the miracle.

Faith, tradition, and community

The typical moments of a Salento village festival revolve around the liturgical celebration: prayers, religious songs, and fireworks that illuminate the night sky. The event is a source of strong identity for the inhabitants of Ugento, who recognize themselves in this devotion passed down through generations.

Ugento and Salento

Located a few kilometers from the Ionian coast, among the marinas and countryside of lower Salento, Ugento is a town of ancient origins, rich in Messapian and Roman history. The Madonna della Luce Festival is part of a calendar of religious traditions that mark the life of the community and represents, for the visitor, an authentic opportunity to discover Apulian popular spirituality outside the summer tourist season.
