The festival of the Casaranello district, blending popular faith and entertainment

In the Casaranello district of Casarano, in the province of Lecce, the Madonna della Croce Festival is one of the most cherished autumn events in Salento. Traditionally held in mid-October, around the third Sunday of the month, the festival stems from popular devotion to the Virgin Mary, venerated in the ancient church that gives the entire district its name. For two days, the neighborhood is transformed: streets are filled with festive lights, churchyards come alive with the faithful, and the San Domenico-Sacro Cuore pastoral community guides the town through a journey that combines liturgy, tradition, and celebration.
The focal point of the festival is the Church of Santa Maria della Croce, also known as the Casaranello church: one of the oldest Christian buildings in Europe. Its oldest section dates back to the 5th-6th century and houses early Christian mosaics of international significance, rediscovered in 1907 by archaeologist Arthur Haseloff, as well as precious Byzantine and Gothic frescoes. Praying to the Madonna della Croce in this place means connecting with over 1,500 years of faith history in Salento: a heritage that makes the festival not just a devotional moment, but also an opportunity to rediscover one of the most precious artistic treasures of Southern Italy.
As in many Apulian patronal festivals, the religious and secular programs in Casaranello proceed side by side. The festival days open with vespers, Eucharistic celebrations, and the solemn procession that winds through the main streets of the parish, accompanied by candlelight and hymns. Alongside devotion, the neighborhood offers the more festive side: comedy shows, folk music concerts, a children's party with inflatables and entertainment, tastings of local products, and the traditional fireworks display that brings Sunday to a spectacular close. It is the perfect synthesis of the Salento spirit, capable of balancing quiet reflection with communal joy.
The festival is organized by the Madonna della Croce Festival Committee together with the local pastoral community, with the patronage of the Municipality of Casarano. It is not just a religious anniversary, but a defining moment for the residents of the district, who renew their bond with their church and roots every year. For visitors discovering Salento beyond the beach resorts, the Madonna della Croce Festival is the ideal opportunity to experience an authentic Casarano, steeped in faith, history, and hospitality.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the Madonna della Croce Festival Committee. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to take place in mid-October, featuring religious celebrations, a procession, shows, tastings of local products, and fireworks in the Casaranello district. Information will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
The celebrations take place in the Casaranello district, around the Church of Santa Maria della Croce, with events also held in Piazza San Domenico and along the parish streets in Casarano (LE).
