The Madonna dell'Arcona Feast is the main patronal celebration in Castrignano de' Greci, a small town in the Grecìa Salentina, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia. Every year, the event falls on the Thursday after Easter and spans two days, blending religious fervor with local festivities, with lights, music, and fireworks enlivening the town center.
The cult revolves around the miraculous Byzantine image of the Virgin and Child, venerated under the title of "Arcona" and kept in the small 18th-century church on the outskirts of the town, next to the cemetery. According to local tradition, around 1730, a man named Donato Cosma received a miraculous healing before the icon: this event sparked a popular devotion that spread rapidly, fueled by accounts of numerous graces received. The Madonna dell'Arcona church, built in 1731, houses the image on the high altar, made of Baroque-style Lecce stone, while a second altar is dedicated to Saint Philomena; next to it, a 1727 structure preserves the bell tower.
The festival is deeply rooted in the Griko identity of Castrignano de' Greci, one of the towns in the Grecìa Salentina where the memory and sounds of the Griko language still survive. The solemnity of the Madonna dell'Arcona still preserves traces of ancient liturgical chants of Greek tradition, a testament to a community that has identified with its patron saint for centuries.
The religious heart of the event is the procession that accompanies the sacred image along the town streets, with the participation of the faithful and local confraternities. The secular festivities unfold around this devotional moment:
For those visiting Salento during the Easter period, the Madonna dell'Arcona Feast is an authentic opportunity to discover a less touristy corner of the province of Lecce and experience a local festival still deeply felt by the community.
