The Madonna dell'Aiuto Festival is the patronal feast of Torre San Giovanni, the lively seaside district of the municipality of Ugento, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Ionian Salento. Every year, around the second Sunday of August, the small fishing village becomes the center of one of the most attended celebrations on the coast, drawing residents, vacationers, and tourists from across Lower Salento.
Devotion to the Madonna dell'Aiuto has its roots in 1611, a year linked to Marian apparitions passed down through local tradition between June and early July. Since then, the Madonna has been venerated as the protector of sailors and seafaring people, a natural bond in a community that lived off fishing for centuries. The parish church dedicated to her, on Via Ercole Libico, is the starting and ending point for all celebrations.
The heart of the festival is the sea procession, a ritual that is as religious as it is scenic. The statue of the Madonna is carried from the church to the small harbor and embarked on a decorated fishing boat, which sets sail followed by a colorful flotilla of boats. The procession cruises along the crowded beaches of Ugento while the faithful watch from the shore, the cliffs, and the promenade with applause, songs, and prayers, before returning to the port for the final mass.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the traditional elements of Salento patronal feasts: sparkling artistic illuminations framing the promenade, the brass band concert in the square, food stalls serving typical Salento dishes along the port, and fireworks that light up the fishing pier late at night. It is a festival that blends the spirituality of the seafaring rite with the popular joy of summer in one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Puglia.
The celebrations are concentrated in Torre San Giovanni, between the Madonna dell'Aiuto church, the port, and the promenade, with the lighthouse and the coastal tower as a backdrop. The district belongs to the Municipality of Ugento (Province of Lecce, Puglia) and is one of the most popular seaside destinations on the Ionian side of Salento.
The Madonna dell'Aiuto Festival returns to Torre San Giovanni, the seaside district of Ugento (LE), for the 2026 edition. At the moment, the dates and program have not yet been published by the parish. Following tradition, the celebrations will be held around the second Sunday of August and will include religious services, the evocative sea procession with the statue of the Madonna embarked on a fishing boat, illuminations along the promenade, a brass band, food stalls, and fireworks on the fishing pier. The program will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
Torre San Giovanni is the seaside district of Ugento (LE). By car, it can be reached via the SS275 (Ugento exit) and the Ionian coastal road of Salento. The nearest Ferrovie del Sud Est train station is Ugento; in summer, bus connections to the seaside districts are available.
The festival takes place around the second Sunday of August, from Saturday to Monday. The sea procession is held on Sunday in the late afternoon; fireworks take place late at night on the fishing pier.
Admission is free. To watch the sea procession, it is recommended to find a spot on the promenade or beach in advance; some boats allow you to participate directly in the sea procession. Parking is limited during the festival days: it is best to arrive early.
