The patronal feast of Vico del Gargano, blending faith, tradition, and the flavors of the Gargano
The Madonna del Rifugio Festival is the most cherished time of the year for Vico del Gargano, a village on the Gargano Promontory in the Province of Foggia, Puglia, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The Madonna del Rifugio is venerated as the town's Patron Saint and Protector: every year in late June, the entire community gathers around her in a tapestry of faith, memory, and tradition that connects the generations who have guarded this festival over time.
The spiritual journey officially begins in the Mother Church with the start of the solemn Novena. For nine evenings, celebrations are marked by the Holy Rosary and Litanies at 6:30 PM, followed by the Eucharistic Celebration at 7:00 PM: a time of prayer and anticipation that prepares the town for the day of the Solemnity.
The main day, the Saturday of the Solemnity, is filled with emotion. From the morning, the traditional band parade by the Garganum musical association brings a festive atmosphere to the streets of the historic center. In the afternoon, the Mother Church hosts the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration, concelebrated by the local clergy in the presence of civil, military, and school authorities, as well as confraternities and associations. Immediately after, the evocative Act of Consecration to the Virgin is renewed, accompanied by the traditional ritual of the presentation of the City Keys by the mayor: a symbolic gesture entrusting Vico and its inhabitants to the protection of the Madonna, serving as a prelude to the Solemn Procession that winds through the streets and alleys of the village in a long parade of the faithful.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival thrives on moments of community sharing. Piazza Castello hosts the secular evening events: 'Calici a Vico', dedicated to tasting wines and local Gargano products with musical entertainment, and 'Made in Italy', featuring music and regional flavors. These are the perfect occasions to enjoy local specialties, from paposcia to pettola, and sweets like the sospiro, in a joyful atmosphere that brings the festivities to a close.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna del Rifugio Festival in Vico del Gargano was held from June 19 to 28, culminating in the weekend of the Solemnity. The community experienced intense days of faith and tradition, between religious celebrations in the Mother Church and secular events in Piazza Castello.
The central moment, Saturday, June 27, combined the ritual of presenting the City Keys to the Virgin with the Solemn Procession. The evenings rounded out the program with 'Calici a Vico' and 'Made in Italy', dedicated to tasting wines and local Gargano products accompanied by live music.
Religious celebrations take place in the Mother Church of Vico del Gargano; evening and secular events are held in Piazza Castello, in the heart of the historic center.
Vico del Gargano can be reached by car via the SS693 and the roads winding up the Gargano Promontory; the reference railway stations are those of the Ferrovie del Gargano. The nearest airports are Bari and Foggia (Gino Lisa).
Religious services, the procession, and the evenings in Piazza Castello are free to attend.
During the festival days, the historic center is particularly lively: it is advisable to arrive early and navigate the alleys on foot. Don't miss the chance to sample local Gargano products during 'Calici a Vico'.
