The Madonna del Mare Festival is one of the most beloved traditions in San Foca, a seaside hamlet of the municipality of Melendugno, in the province of Lecce, along the Adriatic coast of Salento. Every year in July, the small fishing village overlooking the Adriatic gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna del Mare, in a celebration that combines faith, maritime history, and summer joy. It is an ancient rite, driven by the devotion and love of the fishermen for their protector, attracting residents, vacationers, and tourists in the heart of the summer season.
The most evocative and iconic moment is the sea procession. The statue of the Madonna, kept in the Maria Santissima Assunta church on the seafront, is taken out to sea aboard the most beautiful and decorated fishing boat in the harbor, followed by a procession of local fishing boats and pleasure craft. The parade reaches the Spiaggia delle Fontanelle, one of the most popular and appreciated beaches on the coast, in a moment of reflection and prayer that renews the deep bond between the community of San Foca and its sea.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival enlivens the village with brass band concerts, light displays, fireworks, and the inevitable market stalls, where one can find souvenirs and local culinary delicacies. The center of San Foca transforms into a meeting place where the community gathers after the prayers, in an atmosphere that blends the solemnity of religious tradition with the conviviality of Salento summer evenings.
In 2025, the festival took on special significance, coinciding with the first centenary of the Maria SS. Assunta Parish, established in 1925. The celebrations enriched the calendar with cultural events, including the Community Memories photo exhibition, dedicated to the fishermen and the history of the marina, testifying to how this festival is a true identity heritage for the village and the entire Melendugno territory.
An authentic expression of Salento folk traditions, the Madonna del Mare Festival is organized by the Maria SS. Assunta Parish together with the community and the Pro Loco of San Foca. More than just a simple summer event, it represents a living fragment of the maritime identity of the Adriatic Puglia, where faith, memory, and the sea have been intertwined for generations on the coast of the province of Lecce.
The 2026 Madonna del Mare Festival will return as every year to celebrate the patron saint of the fishermen of San Foca, a marina of Melendugno, with religious rites and the evocative sea procession to the Spiaggia delle Fontanelle. The official dates and the detailed program have not yet been released: this page will be updated as soon as the organizers publish the 2026 edition calendar.
