The San Giovanni neighborhood festival in Anagni, blending faith, music, and tradition in Piazza Dante
The Madonna del Buon Consiglio Festival is the most cherished event in the San Giovanni neighborhood of Anagni, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio. Every year, at the beginning of May, the community of the San Giovanni de Duce Parish gathers around its sacred image for four days that weave together devotion, entertainment, and local life. The heart of the festivities is Piazza Dante, which transforms into an open-air stage for celebrations, concerts, and social gatherings.
The journey of faith begins with the preparatory triduum and daily Eucharistic celebrations at the San Giovanni parish. The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the City of Popes, accompanied by the Anagnina Musical Association Band, conducted by maestro Roberto Mattioli. On Sunday, a solemn service is held in Piazza Dante, animated by the Città di Anagni Polyphonic Choir, led by maestro Luigi Ginesti.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program. Evenings in the square feature musical and theatrical performances, ranging from local singing academy students to regional theater companies, as well as concerts that bring spring nights to life. There is also a charity raffle, a craft market, and the essential food stalls run by the parish, where you can savor traditional Ciociarian dishes.
Set in one of the most fascinating locations in Lazio, the festival is also an opportunity to discover Anagni, famous as the "City of Popes" for being the birthplace of four pontiffs and for its extraordinary medieval heritage, from the Cathedral of Santa Maria to the Palace of Boniface VIII. The Madonna del Buon Consiglio Festival preserves the authentic character of Italian neighborhood feasts, where faith meets solidarity: proceeds collected during guided tours are traditionally donated to support children's missions in Africa.
From May 7 to 10, 2026, the San Giovanni neighborhood in Anagni celebrated the Madonna del Buon Consiglio with a program that combined religious rites, performances, and charitable initiatives, centered in Piazza Dante.
