The August 2nd patronal feast in Castellalto, blending faith, tradition, and live music
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna degli Angeli Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Castellalto, a hilltop village in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo. Every year, around August 2nd, the community gathers to honor the Madonna degli Angeli in a celebration that weaves the region's deep religious traditions with secular festivities organized by the parish and local associations.
The date of August 2nd is no coincidence: the festival is linked to the Pardon of Assisi, the plenary indulgence granted in 1216 to Saint Francis at the Porziuncola of Santa Maria degli Angeli. In Castellalto, the San Giovanni Evangelista Parish opens the Pardon with an evening mass, followed in the subsequent days by Marian celebrations: morning Lauds, the procession with the crowning of the Madonna statue in the square, and a solemn mass with a procession through the village streets accompanied by a marching band.
Alongside its spiritual dimension, the festival offers a lively secular program open to everyone. In the 2025 edition, secular festivities returned to the forefront after more than a decade, featuring theatrical shows, a major free concert in Piazza del Mercato, and entertainment designed for families and young people. There is no shortage of food stalls where visitors can savor Abruzzo cuisine and local products, as well as the traditional lottery draw.
The Madonna degli Angeli Festival represents an opportunity for Castellalto to celebrate its identity: a moment when the village embraces its roots, combining Marian devotion with the joy of a popular feast. The organizers' goal is to blend traditional celebrations with an engaging event that appeals to all generations.
Nestled among the rolling hills of Teramo, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast and the Gran Sasso, Castellalto offers visitors scenic views, a charming historic center, and warm Abruzzese hospitality. The August festival is the ideal time to discover the village at its most vibrant.
