The skyrunning race between Rumo and the summit of Monte Pin, in the upper Val di Non
The Maddalene Sky Race is a summer highlight for mountain running enthusiasts, held in Rumo, a charming village in the upper Val di Non, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The race winds through the Maddalene mountain group, straddling the Val di Non and Val d'Ultimo in one of the wildest and most pristine corners of western Trentino. Over the years, it has become a benchmark for skyrunning, a discipline that blends trail running with mountaineering on high-altitude terrain.
The route is a loop of approximately 23 kilometers with 1,750 meters of positive elevation gain, starting and finishing at the multi-purpose center in Corte Superiore di Rumo, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters. After the start, runners ascend via SAT trails 148 and 149 to Malga Binasia, then follow the Aldo Bonacossa trail (133) to reach the race's highest point, the summit of Monte Pin at 2,420 meters. The descent passes through Malga Cemiglio di fuori, leading athletes back to the finish line. The course alternates between green pastures, high-mountain tarns, and rocky plateaus, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Brenta Dolomites and the Val d'Ultimo.
The event is organized by A.S.D. Maddalene Sky Marathon, based in Marcena di Rumo and led by Sandro Martinelli. The race is an official event on the Italian Skyrunning Federation (FISky) calendar and a stage of the Trentino Mountain Cup provincial circuit. The current format, renewed in 2023, carries on the legacy of the historic Maddalene Sky Marathon, which previously started from Senale with a longer route. After the race, the traditional Pasta Party and the awards ceremony bring the afternoon in Rumo to life.
Beyond its sporting significance, the Maddalene Sky Race is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the upper Val di Non and the municipality of Rumo, promoting slow tourism and the exploration of the Maddalene trails. The race attracts athletes from across Trentino and beyond, helping to highlight a region of great natural beauty on the border with South Tyrol.
The fourth edition under the current format was held on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Rumo, in the upper Val di Non. On the 23-kilometer course with 1,750 meters of elevation gain, featuring the climb to the summit of Monte Pin (2,420 m), Luca Lafranconi (Mandello del Lario) triumphed in the men's category, finishing in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 39 seconds. Behind him were Alex Rigo (2h32'13'') and Lorenzo Visintainer (2h37'36''). The start was at 9:00 AM from the Corte Superiore multi-purpose center, followed by the traditional Pasta Party and awards ceremony in the afternoon.
Rumo is located in the upper Val di Non, in northwestern Trentino. By car, it can be reached via the SS42 Tonale and Mendola road, exiting towards Cles and continuing through the Val di Non to Rumo (Corte Superiore). The nearest train station is Cles, on the Trento-Malè-Mezzana line, from which you can continue by car or bus.
Registration is handled online via the platform indicated on the official website, closing a few days before the race. A valid ID and a competitive sports medical certificate are required for registration. A FISky membership (annual or daily) is required.
