Theatre hits the streets in Garbatella

M'Illumino di Teatro in Garbatella is a free, community-based theatre festival that has been bringing live performances directly to the people since 2022, in the heart of one of Rome's most distinctive neighbourhoods. The stage isn't a closed theatre, but Piazza Damiano Sauli, in the capital's Municipality VIII, which transforms into a sprawling arena under the stars for a summer week. The concept is simple yet powerful: reclaim public space for the residents, inviting them to step out into the street with a folding chair, a cushion, or a blanket to enjoy the shows side-by-side with their neighbours.

The 2026 fifth edition

In 2026, the event celebrates its fifth edition. The beating heart of the festival is the week from August 1st to 7th, 2026, with seven consecutive evenings starting at 8:00 PM in Piazza Damiano Sauli. However, the festival doesn't end in August: it continues until October 13th, 2026, with workshops, participatory projects, and artistic residencies aimed at all age groups, from the young to the over-60s. The artistic direction is led by Alessia Esposito, and the event is produced by the 369gradi organization, promoted by Roma Capitale as part of the "Roma Creativa 365" public initiative.

A multidisciplinary programme

The programme for the August evenings weaves together contemporary theatre, circus, storytelling, music, and participatory performances. Highlights include:

• Saturday, August 1st — "Nessun Morda! Arie d'Opera anche per chi non le ha mai capite" (Don't Bite! Opera Arias even for those who never understood them), with Gioia Salvatori and Maurizio Rippa, who recount opera with irony and lightness, accompanied by the young voices of the "Fabbrica" project from the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
• Sunday, August 2nd — "Saga Salsa", a dinner-show centered on the ritual of dining and family memory.
• Monday, August 3rd — "Solo quando lavoro sono felice" (I'm only happy when I'm working), a satire on contemporary work by Lorenzo Maragoni and Niccolò Fettarappa.
• Tuesday, August 4th — "Mr. Ping Pong" by Paolo Piludu, featuring clowning, juggling, and balancing acts.
• Wednesday, August 5th — A concert by Wunder Tandem, featuring musical reinterpretations in a folk-festival style.
• Thursday, August 6th — "Loco-Motiv" by Gambeinspalla Teatro, a poetic performance of soap bubbles, smoke, and small fires.
• Friday, August 7th — "ZTL – Zona a Traffico Limitato" (Limited Traffic Zone) by and with Andrea Rampazzo, a collective action that invites the audience to move and reflect on shared spaces.

A cultural and civic project

More than just a festival, M'Illumino di Teatro is a cultural and civic project that makes free access its political core. Alongside the shows, workshops like "Il Karaoke della Memoria" (The Memory Karaoke) dedicated to the over-60s and writing courses directly involve the residents of Garbatella, a popular Roman district known for its unique housing architecture and strong sense of community. The event engages with the local area, neighbourhood committees, and local entities, confirming itself as a highly anticipated summer appointment in Lazio and throughout the capital.
