Ten days of international classical music among the villages of Lunigiana
The Lunigiana International Music Festival (LIMF) is one of the most fascinating events in the musical landscape of Northern Tuscany. Established in 2017 and held in Fivizzano, in the Province of Massa-Carrara, the festival brings dozens of young instrumentalists and singers from all over the world to the heart of Lunigiana each summer for ten intense days of study, chamber music, and public concerts.
The format combines a residential music academy with a rich concert series: participants—pianists, string and wind players, opera singers, and composers from over thirty countries, ranging from the United States to Japan, South Korea, and Latin America—attend daily masterclasses and perform on stage alongside their teachers in the valley's historic villages.
What sets the LIMF apart is the caliber of its faculty, composed of musicians associated with some of the world's most important institutions: the Juilliard School in New York, the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the conservatories of Frankfurt and Zurich, as well as soloists and orchestral players from the BBC Philharmonic and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn. Disciplines include piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, horn, oboe, opera and chamber singing, baroque and contemporary repertoire, and composition.
The public heart of the festival is the calendar of free concerts that bring Fivizzano and the surrounding Lunigiana villages to life. Solo recitals, symphonic concerts, and multidisciplinary productions are hosted in stunning locations: the Church of San Giovanni in Fivizzano, the Romanesque Pieve of Codiponte, the theater in Pontremoli, and other evocative settings in the valley. The festival concludes with a final orchestral concert where the best students, selected through an internal competition, perform as soloists.
Beyond lessons, the LIMF offers seminars on music management and entrepreneurship, meetings on digital creation, Italian language lessons, and cultural and nature excursions to discover Lunigiana. It is a project that weaves together education, cultural tourism, and regional promotion, founded by Chantal Balestri and Andrea Rossi and supported by the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of Fivizzano, and the Rotary Club of Lunigiana.
For the audience, the festival is an opportunity to hear world-class young talent for free in settings that are worth the trip in their own right. For the musicians, it is an immersive experience that combines high-level training with community life: evenings often conclude with informal gatherings in the village squares, where the music continues long after the final concert.
The 9th edition of the Lunigiana International Music Festival will be held in Fivizzano from July 16 to 26, 2026. Once again, the festival welcomes young instrumentalists, singers, and composers from all over the world for ten days of intensive study and public concerts in the villages of Lunigiana.
The program includes masterclasses in major instrumental and vocal disciplines (piano, strings, winds, opera, chamber music, baroque and contemporary repertoire, composition), private lessons, orchestral rehearsals, seminars on musical careers, and a calendar of about ten free public concerts hosted in Fivizzano and the surrounding area. Musician applications are collected via the Acceptd platform, with deadlines between January and May 2026 and live auditions also planned in Miami and New York.
The festival is spread over ten days with a consolidated daily structure, while the detailed calendar of 2026 public concerts will be published on the official website and Facebook page in the weeks preceding the event.
