The medieval music festival of Giarratana, in the Iblei Mountains
The MeMu Fest (Medieval & Music) is the grand medieval festival of Giarratana, a small village perched in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Ragusa, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. For two days, the Parco dei Settimo and the ancient streets of the historic center, near the ruins of the old castle, turn into an authentic medieval village where time seems to have turned back centuries.
The event is conceived and curated by the Gruppo Tamburi Cittร di Giarratana, an association that has made historical re-enactment and the art of drumming its hallmark. The festival is supported by the Municipality of Giarratana, the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Ragusa, and the Sicilian Region, involving numerous local entities every year.
MeMu Fest offers a rich and engaging program, designed for all ages, which brings the village to life from sunset until late at night:
A major focus is placed on period gastronomy: the tavern stands offer roasts and dishes inspired by medieval cuisine, accompanied by hippocras, the famous spiced wine and honey drink. The scents of ancient spices and forgotten flavors complete this immersive journey into the past.
MeMu Fest is considered the only festival dedicated to the Middle Ages in the entire province of Ragusa. Beyond its spectacular appeal, the event aims to promote the Iblean territory and help rediscover the history and traditions of Giarratana, Sicily, attracting visitors from across the south-east of the island every year.
The 2026 edition of MeMu Fest will be held on Friday, July 17th, and Saturday, July 18th, at the Parco dei Settimo in Giarratana, in the Iblei Mountains. The evenings kick off around 7:30 PM and continue until late at night.
The program confirms the ingredients that have made the festival famous: historical re-enactments with costumed performers, drummers and flag-wavers, duels and fire shows, falconry displays, medieval music and dances, craft markets with live demonstrations, and the medieval tavern with roasts and hippocras. A festival that transforms the Iblean village, in the province of Ragusa, into a realm from another era.
