About MeMu Fest

MeMu Fest is the medieval festival of Giarratana, in the province of Ragusa, organized by the Gruppo Tamburi Cittร  di Giarratana. Every year, on the penultimate weekend of July, the Parco dei Settimo and the ancient streets of this Iblean village transform into a realm from another era: costumed performers, drummers and flag-wavers, fire shows, falconry, duels, medieval dances, and a tavern serving period dishes and hippocras. It is the only festival dedicated to the Middle Ages in the entire province of Ragusa.

A dive into the Middle Ages in the Iblei Mountains

The MeMu Fest (Medieval & Music) is the grand medieval festival of Giarratana, a small village perched in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Ragusa, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. For two days, the Parco dei Settimo and the ancient streets of the historic center, near the ruins of the old castle, turn into an authentic medieval village where time seems to have turned back centuries.

Who organizes the festival

The event is conceived and curated by the Gruppo Tamburi Cittร  di Giarratana, an association that has made historical re-enactment and the art of drumming its hallmark. The festival is supported by the Municipality of Giarratana, the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Ragusa, and the Sicilian Region, involving numerous local entities every year.

What to see and do

MeMu Fest offers a rich and engaging program, designed for all ages, which brings the village to life from sunset until late at night:

  • Costumed performers animating the streets and squares of the town
  • Drummers and flag-wavers, the true beating heart of the event
  • Fire shows and sword duels between knights
  • Falconry displays with trained birds of prey
  • Medieval music and dances with minstrels and traveling groups
  • Craft markets with live demonstrations of ancient trades

The medieval tavern

A major focus is placed on period gastronomy: the tavern stands offer roasts and dishes inspired by medieval cuisine, accompanied by hippocras, the famous spiced wine and honey drink. The scents of ancient spices and forgotten flavors complete this immersive journey into the past.

A unique event in the province of Ragusa

MeMu Fest is considered the only festival dedicated to the Middle Ages in the entire province of Ragusa. Beyond its spectacular appeal, the event aims to promote the Iblean territory and help rediscover the history and traditions of Giarratana, Sicily, attracting visitors from across the south-east of the island every year.

MeMu Fest โ€” edition 2026

The ninth edition of MeMu Fest returns to Giarratana on July 17 and 18, 2026. For two evenings, the Parco dei Settimo comes alive with costumed performers, drummers and flag-wavers, fire shows, duels, falconry, medieval music and dances, craft markets, and a tavern serving roasts and hippocras.

MeMu Fest 2026 โ€” ninth edition

The 2026 edition of MeMu Fest will be held on Friday, July 17th, and Saturday, July 18th, at the Parco dei Settimo in Giarratana, in the Iblei Mountains. The evenings kick off around 7:30 PM and continue until late at night.

The program confirms the ingredients that have made the festival famous: historical re-enactments with costumed performers, drummers and flag-wavers, duels and fire shows, falconry displays, medieval music and dances, craft markets with live demonstrations, and the medieval tavern with roasts and hippocras. A festival that transforms the Iblean village, in the province of Ragusa, into a realm from another era.
