A night walk organized by Bitetto Runners through the olive groves of the Murgia
Luci sul Cammino is the summer event where Bitetto Runners ASD invites walkers, families, and enthusiasts to discover the territory of Bitetto, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia, under the patronage of the Municipality. It is not a race: there are no stopwatches or rankings, only the pleasure of walking together at sunset along country paths illuminated by torches and lanterns. Its simple, inclusive format has made the event a small summer classic in Bitetto.
The route winds along the trails and olive groves surrounding the town, near the Via Peuceta of the Cammino Materano, the pilgrimage route that connects Bari to Matera across the Murgia. Walking at night along these white roads means rediscovering a rural landscape of dry-stone walls, ancient trees, and silence, in a suspended atmosphere that is the true hallmark of the event.
The walk, of moderate length and suitable for everyone, is designed as a collective experience rather than an athletic challenge. At the end of the walk, participants gather for a social moment with refreshments, an opportunity to share the experience and savor local products. Highlights of the initiative include:
The first edition of Luci sul Cammino was held in 2022, on the evocative Night of Saint John, and in subsequent years the event has grown to become a permanent fixture of the Bitetto summer calendar, with departures and arrivals from iconic local landmarks such as the Tenuta Peuceta and local oil mills.
Located a few kilometers from Bari, Bitetto is known for its Romanesque cathedral and the olive oil tradition that ties it to the surrounding countryside, dotted with olive groves. Linking the night walk to an oil mill or cultivated olive lands is a way to tell the story of this corner of Puglia, where sport, landscape, and gastronomy naturally intertwine.
The 2026 edition of Luci sul Cammino takes place on Friday, July 3, and carries a title that highlights the region's olive oil identity: the Frantoio Edition. The meeting is set for 6:00 PM at the Frantoio Oleario Fazio Antonio in Bitetto, with the walk starting at 7:00 PM.
The route, approximately 7 kilometers long, winds through the olive groves and country roads of the town, on a track suitable for everyone and without any competitive ranking: the goal is to walk together during the cooler evening hours. Upon return, a social moment with final refreshments is planned to extend the time spent together.
The event is organized by Bitetto Runners ASD with the patronage of the Municipality of Bitetto and the collaboration of the Frantoio Oleario Fazio Antonio and the GAP - Gruppo Attivitร Polivalenti Bitetto. Water and the official Bitetto Runners bag are reserved for the first 250 registrants.
Bitetto can be reached by car via the SS96 Bari-Altamura (Bitetto exit) or by train via the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, on the Bari-Matera line. The town is about 20 km from Bari.
Participation requires registration, managed by the Bitetto Runners ASD, including via an online platform. Meeting in the late afternoon with departure at sunset. Comfortable trekking shoes and a flashlight are recommended. Updates on dates and meeting points are available on the official Bitetto Runners social media pages.
