Medieval historical re-enactment at the Swabian-Angevin Fortress of Lucera
Luceria 1240 – The Emperor's Call is the medieval historical re-enactment that brings the Swabian-Angevin Fortress of Lucera to life in June 2026, in the heart of the Capitanata region, province of Foggia. Organized by the social promotion association Gens Capitanatae APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Lucera, the event transforms the imposing city walls into a vast medieval camp, reconstructed with rigorous historical accuracy, where the public can walk among the tents, observe artisans at work, and meet re-enactors in period costumes.
The narrative is set in June 1240, a moment of exceptional importance for the Kingdom of Sicily. During those months, the Capitanata became the logistical hub for the imperial mobilization toward Northern Italy: Frederick II of Swabia was preparing his military campaigns and entrusted the Justiciar with the task of gathering knights and troops from the territory. In this scenario, the Muslim colony of Lucera, firmly integrated into the Swabian power structures, played a primary role as a stronghold of the Kingdom. The re-enactment brings this web of power to life, staging the meeting between the Justiciar of the Kingdom, the Swabian military elite, the local feudal nobility, and the leaders of the Lucera community.
The two days alternate between educational sessions and grand re-enactments. The public can witness the arrival of the Justiciar, the solemn knighting ceremony reconstructed according to formulas and protocols documented by historical sources, the historical archery tournament, and the review of the troops assembled for the military campaign. The evenings conclude with Music and Poetry at Court in the 13th Century, which showcases the refined culture of the Frederician court. Mornings are dedicated to educational activities regarding social roles, clothing, and daily life in the 13th century.
The event has an international scope, bringing together historical groups from Italy and abroad: the Comthurey Alpinum from Switzerland, the I.G. Wolf from Germany, the Gualdana dell'Orso from Abruzzo, and the Milites Friderici II from Puglia. The reconstruction is based on documentary, iconographic, and archaeological sources: raw fabrics, weapons forged according to original models, and ritual formulas recovered from historical records accurately recreate the atmosphere of the 13th century.
Hosting Luceria 1240 at the Fortress is no coincidence: Lucera was one of the capitals of the Swabian system and preserves the memory of that era in its heritage. The event, which is free and non-commercial, combines the promotion of the monument with historical research and local identity, offering residents and visitors an immersion into the great medieval history of Puglia.
