About Lu Sant'Antonie

In Villamagna, in the province of Chieti, the Lu Sant'Antonie has been staged for over seventy years. This sacred-profane performance is dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot. Amateur actors of all ages, gathered in the Gruppo Storico Sant'Antonio, bring the hermit's life and his struggle against the tempting devils to the stage, accompanied by live music. A popular Abruzzese ritual that unites the entire village every January, around the 17th, in the spirit of faith and tradition.

A popular tradition spanning over seventy years

In Villamagna, a small village in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the hilly Abruzzo region, the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot has been celebrated for over seventy years with a theatrical performance known by its local name, Lu Sant'Antonie. This is no ordinary show, but a true community ritual: a living heritage passed down from generation to generation, which brings the entire village to the stage every year around January 17th.

The production is managed by the Gruppo Storico Sant'Antonio di Villamagna, composed of amateur actors of various ages. Many of its members have literally grown up with this performance: as children, they played the roles of the "little devils," eventually taking on more significant parts as the years went by. It is precisely this passing of the torch between generations that makes Lu Sant'Antonie a defining event for the Villamagna community.

The duel between good and evil

At the center of the performance is the figure of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the Egyptian hermit who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries, revered throughout Abruzzo as the protector of animals and the farming world. The play recounts his life and, above all, his famous temptations: the Saint, supported by angels, faces and defeats the tempting devils in a continuous symbolic duel between Good and Evil.

The show is accompanied by live music and traditional songs that mark the different moments of the narrative. The result is a typically Abruzzese fusion of the sacred and the profane, where religious devotion intertwines with popular theater, folklore, and the rhythms of agropastoral culture.

The cult of Saint Anthony the Abbot in the Chieti area

The Villamagna performance is part of a broader calendar of Abruzzese rituals linked to Saint Anthony the Abbot, which find some of their most intense expressions in the province of Chieti. Throughout the region, around January 17th, purifying bonfires are lit, animals are blessed, and itinerant groups of actors and musicians bring the performance of the Saint's temptations from house to house. Villamagna guards its own version of this heritage, offering it to the public as an indoor theatrical production.

A festive moment for the whole village

Lu Sant'Antonie is not just a performance to watch, but a gathering that unites young and old, bringing the village's roots to life every January. Genuine and heartfelt, created entirely by local volunteers, the event represents one of the most anticipated winter appointments in Villamagna and a precious testament to the popular traditions of the Municipality of Villamagna and the entire Abruzzo Region.
