About Lo Pan Ner – Lignod

Every autumn, the community oven in Lignod, an ancient hamlet of Ayas, is fired up again for Lo Pan Ner – I pani delle Alpi (Black Bread – Breads of the Alps), the major cross-border celebration of black rye bread involving dozens of municipalities in the Aosta Valley and across the Alps between Italy, Switzerland, and France. For two days, the ritual of baking in the wood-fired oven is brought back to life: the aroma of hot bread, bread-making demonstrations, rye milling, a market of local products, traditional games, and stories of mountain traditions in the heart of the Val d'Ayas.

The Lignod Oven and the Black Bread Festival

Lo Pan Ner – I pani delle Alpi is the cross-border festival that every autumn relights the community ovens of the Alps to celebrate black rye bread, a symbolic food of Aosta Valley culture for centuries. In Ayas (Aosta province), the star is the historic Lignod oven, one of the most picturesque hamlets in the municipality, where the old wood-fired oven is brought back into operation for the occasion.

A Tradition Shared Across the Italian, Swiss, and French Alps

The event is not just for Ayas: on the same weekend, dozens of municipalities in the Aosta Valley light their ovens, in dialogue with Piedmont, alpine Lombardy (Bergamo, Brescia, Sondrio, Varese), Switzerland (Valposchiavo, Valais), and France (Parc des Bauges). In the past, in mountain villages, rye bread was baked only a few times a year in the communal oven and stored for months: Lo Pan Ner commemorates this collective act that held communities together.

What Happens in Lignod

On the festival day, the Lignod oven comes alive: visitors can witness the baking of black bread, visit the mill for rye grinding, and even knead and bake their own loaves. Around the oven, there's a market of local products, exhibitions of old agricultural tools and objects, wooden games for children, demonstrations of traditional crafts, and performances by a costumed folk group. It's an authentic experience to discover the Val d'Ayas outside the main tourist season.

Lo Pan Ner – Lignod — edition 2026

For 2026, the historic Lignod oven (Ayas) will once again be fired up for the cross-border Lo Pan Ner – I pani delle Alpi festival, scheduled as usual in October. The precise date has not yet been announced: in recent editions, the black bread festival has been held in mid-October, involving dozens of municipalities in the Aosta Valley and across the Alps.

The 2026 edition of Lo Pan Ner in Ayas confirms the ritual of lighting the historic Lignod oven as part of the major cross-border celebration of black Alpine bread. The final date will be announced by the organizers on the official website lopanner.com and on the Ayas municipality's channels: the event traditionally takes place in October. As in previous editions, the day will feature baking of black bread in the wood-fired oven, a visit to the mill for rye grinding, a market of local products, and family entertainment.
