The sacred representation of Holy Saturday in the village of the Abruzzo National Park
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
Every Holy Saturday, the village of Barrea, in the province of L'Aquila, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Living Passion of Barrea is a sacred representation that brings the final days of Jesus' life to the stage, from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion and resurrection. It is one of the most deeply felt events of Holy Week in Abruzzo, capable of drawing thousands of spectators to the small town overlooking the lake.
What makes this event unique is the involvement of the entire community: over 150 performers, all residents of Barrea, become actors, extras, costume designers, and set designers. There are no professionals: the citizens themselves give body and voice to the characters of the Passion in a choral ritual passed down from generation to generation. Handcrafted costumes, dialogue, stage effects, and new scenes added to each edition bring a constantly evolving spectacle to life.
The performance begins in the historic centre of Barrea and continues along a path that climbs towards the hill, using the stone houses, medieval alleys, and the landscape of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park as a natural backdrop. The spectator follows the procession from scene to scene, immersed in an evocative atmosphere that blends theatre, religion, and collective memory. In 2024, the Municipality inaugurated the "Passion Trail," a thematic path designed to further enhance the event.
The event was founded in 1987 and is organized by the Associazione Culturale Antologia, with the collaboration of the Pro Loco Vallis Regia of Barrea. Over the years, the Living Passion has grown to become, as the local press has defined it, a "cornerstone of Abruzzo traditions," famous well beyond the regional borders.
The village of Barrea, resting on a promontory overlooking the lake of the same name, is one of the most characteristic towns in the Alto Sangro. The setting of the National Park, with its forests and Apennine fauna, adds charm to a representation that is simultaneously a spiritual event, a popular spectacle, and an occasion for gathering for the entire province of L'Aquila and for Abruzzo.
The Living Passion of Barrea will not take place in 2026. The Associazione Culturale Antologia has officially communicated the decision to skip the edition, explaining that current circumstances would have made it difficult to guarantee the artistic, scenographic, and organizational standards that have made the event famous. As stated by the organizers, it is a choice dictated by a "sense of responsibility towards the community and the public who have followed the event with affection for years."
The appointment is postponed to 2027, the year in which the Living Passion will celebrate its fortieth anniversary with an extraordinary edition, designed to be even more intense and participatory.
Barrea can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit) by continuing towards the Alto Sangro, or along the SS83 Marsicana road through the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The nearest train station is Alfedena-Scontrone.
The performance traditionally takes place on Holy Saturday in the late afternoon along the streets of the historic centre.
The event is held outdoors in the public spaces of the village. Comfortable clothing and suitable footwear are recommended, as the route includes uphill sections towards the hill.
