About Vittoria Colonna in Pescocostanzo

Every summer, Pescocostanzo, an elegant village on the Cinquemiglia Plateau in the province of L'Aquila, travels back to 1535 to commemorate the visit of the Marchioness Vittoria Colonna d'Avalos, the town's feudal lady and a prominent figure of the Italian Renaissance. A procession of ladies, knights, and men-at-arms in period costume parades through baroque squares and palaces, accompanied by poetry readings and period music. It is a collective theatrical performance that turns the entire historic center into a living book of Abruzzo history and culture.

A poetess marchioness in the heart of Abruzzo

Vittoria Colonna in Pescocostanzo is the historical re-enactment that brings the mountain village in the province of L'Aquila back to the year 1535 every summer, when the Marchioness Vittoria Colonna d'Avalos visited the fiefdom she ruled from 1525 to 1547. Set in the heart of Abruzzo, on the Cinquemiglia Plateau, the event is organized by the Tarquinio Vulpes Cultural Association and has been held since its first edition in 2015.

The procession and the performance

The re-enactment reconstructs the solemn entry of the procession into the village: the marchioness arrives accompanied by her chamberlain, the captain of the guards, and her army, followed by noblewomen, ladies-in-waiting, and men-at-arms. Near the steps of Santa Maria del Colle, she is officially received by the Governor, the Mayor, the Notary, and the Chamberlain, in the presence of the entire Universitas of Pescocostanzo. The route winds through the baronial palaces of the historic center and culminates with the marchioness's speech and the reading of the new building regulations at the Palazzo dell'Università.

A living book of Renaissance history

  • Dozens of participants in Renaissance costumes: ladies, knights, men-at-arms, and commoners
  • Poetry readings dedicated to the figure of Vittoria Colonna, a refined poetess and friend of Michelangelo
  • Period music and outdoor theatrical performances
  • Natural stage setting provided by the squares, carved portals, and goldsmith workshops of the village

Pescocostanzo, the village of intertwined threads

Recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the town of Pescocostanzo is famous for its artisanal traditions, particularly bobbin lace making, wrought iron, and goldsmithing. The re-enactment highlights this heritage, recalling how Vittoria Colonna's stay stimulated the community's cultural and artistic growth in the 16th century. The event is included in the National Register of Historical Re-enactments of the Ministry of Culture.

When it takes place

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Pescocostanzo and the organizing association as summer approaches.
