The Nativity comes to life in the park of a 16th-century convent, featuring dialogue, carols, and the trades of 18th-century Naples
Every year, between Boxing Day and Epiphany, the park of the Capuchin Friars Minor Convent in Nola, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, transforms into a Nativity village. The Living Nativity Scene performed in the Neapolitan style is not merely a sequence of static tableaux; it is a theatrical performance where the characters of the nativity speak, sing, and engage with the audience using the language, rhythms, and wit of the Neapolitan tradition. It is this choice, rather than the scale of the set, that gives the event its distinct identity.
The scenography recreates 18th-century Naples, the golden age of Neapolitan nativity art. Along the path, visitors encounter workshops, hearths, tools, and popular figures that reflect the daily life of the time, while the Holy Family remains the heart of the story.
The Santa Croce Capuchin Friars convent complex in Nola dates back to the mid-16th century. Its foundation is linked to donations from local families, particularly Antonio Albertini, on the site where an ancient church dedicated to the Holy Cross once stood. The cloister, the convent spaces, and especially the wooded park on Via Cappuccini offer the performance a backdrop that no constructed set could match: the religious architecture itself, with its walls and ancient trees, becomes part of the nativity scene.
The event is organized by the ComeTe Association together with the Capuchin Friars Minor of Nola. The formula combines the spiritual dimension of the religious community with the professionalism of the performers, many of whom have theatrical experience. The result has exceeded the organizers' own expectations: in the 2024-2025 Christmas edition, the nativity scene welcomed over a thousand visitors in just two days, with attendees arriving from outside Nola, leading the local press to describe it as a well-established tradition for the city.
Those who come here do not just watch a static show: they walk inside the scene, stop in front of the workshops, listen to the banter in dialect, and recognize the carols that have accompanied Christmas in Campania for generations. It is an experience suitable for families and children, but also for those seeking the most authentic and less touristy side of the Christmas holidays in Campania. The fact that everything takes place in the evening, with lights glowing in the winter chill, adds significantly to the atmosphere.
Nola is one of the most important historical centers in the Nola area of Campania, a short distance from Naples and well-connected to the metropolitan road and rail network. The Capuchin living nativity is part of the dense Campanian calendar of living nativity scenes that, between December and January, animates dozens of municipalities in the provinces of Naples, Caserta, Salerno, Avellino, and Benevento. In this landscape, the Nola proposal stands out for its choice of theatrical performance and its conscious use of the convent setting.
The performances are concentrated in the days following Christmas and around Epiphany, starting in the early evening. As this is an outdoor event, dates may vary from year to year: it is always advisable to check the updated calendar on the Nola Capuchin Friars' channels before traveling.
For the 2025-2026 edition, the ComeTe Association and the Capuchin Friars Minor of Nola expanded the calendar to six evenings: December 26, 27, and 28, 2025, then January 4, 5, and 6, 2026, with performances starting at 6:00 PM in the public park on Via Cappuccini.
The path followed the formula that led to the success of previous editions: an illuminated evening walk through the park of the 16th-century convent, punctuated by workshops of ancient trades, scenes of daily life in 18th-century Naples, and dialogues performed by the actors, leading up to the representation of the Nativity.
Traditional Neapolitan Christmas carols, period costumes, and careful lighting restored the atmosphere of the most authentic Campanian Christmas, in a setting — that of the Santa Croce Capuchin Friars convent complex — which remains one of the most evocative places in Nola and the entire metropolitan area of Naples.
After the success of the previous edition, which closed with over a thousand attendees in just two days, the event confirmed itself as one of the most followed in the Nola Christmas calendar, capable of attracting audiences even from neighboring towns in the province.
