The Nativity comes to life among the Etruscan tombs of the rock-hewn necropolis, lit by hundreds of torches
The Living Nativity of the Ancient City of Sutri is one of the most evocative Christmas events in the Lazio region. The reenactment of the Nativity does not take place in an ordinary square or village, but within the Archaeological Park of the Ancient City of Sutri, along the Via Cassia: the Etruscan-Roman rock-hewn necropolis, with its dozens of tombs carved into the tuff, and the adjacent Roman amphitheatre become the natural stage for a small Bethlehem illuminated by hundreds of torches. The scent of freshly baked bread and mulled wine accompanies visitors along the entire route.
The event was born from an idea by Giovan Battista Caccia and has surpassed thirty editions: the 2024-2025 edition celebrated its 31st year of activity. Today, the event is organized by the Pro Loco of Sutri with the support of the Municipality of Sutri and local associations such as "For Sutri," which brings together volunteer citizens committed to keeping the tradition alive. An organizational machine that mobilizes between fifty and seventy performers every year, each with a specific role.
The visitors' journey starts near the Roman amphitheatre and winds through the tombs of the necropolis, passing by the Mithraeum, the ancient sanctuary carved into the rock, where lights and sounds accompany the descent towards the Nativity cave. Along the path, scenes of Palestine from two thousand years ago come to life: shepherds with their flocks, laundresses, blacksmiths, bakers, meat and fish stalls, knights, and merchants. Performers in period costumes faithfully recreate ancient crafts, and there is no shortage of video mapping projections and narratives that enrich the experience.
The most anticipated moment is the one that concludes the event: on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, the procession of the Three Wise Men leaves in the late afternoon from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in the historic center, and descends from the old town to the Nativity cave for the adoration of the Child. It is the ideal conclusion to a story that combines faith, history, and spectacle.
The living nativity is also an opportunity to discover Sutri, one of the most fascinating villages in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region, a historic stop on the Via Francigena at the gates of Rome. The ancient cityโso defined for its origins dating back to the Etruscan ageโpreserves an amphitheatre entirely carved into the tuff, the rock-hewn necropolis, the Mithraeum transformed into the church of the Madonna del Parto, and a medieval historic center of great charm. During the Christmas holidays, the village comes alive with initiatives, markets, and typical flavors of the Tuscia region.
The route, also suitable for children, can be visited freely during evening opening hours, without reservation. The intimate atmosphere, the torches, the costumes, and the archaeological setting make it one of the most intense Christmas experiences in central Italy, capable of attracting visitors from Rome, Tuscia, and Umbria every year.
Six evenings of performance in the Etruscan-Roman necropolis of Sutri, illuminated by hundreds of torches: December 26, 27, and 28, 2025, and January 1, 4, and 6, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The route, starting near the Roman amphitheatre, passed through the Mithraeum and the rock-hewn tombs up to the Nativity cave, among shepherds, laundresses, blacksmiths, bakers, meat and fish stalls, and knights.
The edition, organized by the Pro Loco of Sutri led by president Roberto Taschini, involved between fifty and seventy performers and was enriched by video mapping curated by Simone Calcagni and narration by Manuele Pica.
