The Saint Hippolytus Festival is the most cherished event of the year for the community of Vetralla, a town in the province of Viterbo in the heart of the Tuscia region, Lazio. According to local tradition, Saint Hippolytus was a Roman knight martyred right here: his feast day falls on August 13th, when the entire city gathers around its protector with religious celebrations, historical re-enactments, and popular festivities.

The procession of the relics

The most solemn moment of the festivities is the evening procession on August 12th, when the image of the Saint and the relic of his head are carried through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and knights on horseback, paying homage to the equestrian figure of Saint Hippolytus. It is a ritual that blends devotion and civic identity, followed with great participation by the entire Vetralla community and visitors.

The historical pageant and the Saint Hippolytus Palio

On August 13th, the festival reaches its peak with a historical pageant starting from Piazza Umberto I and reaching the municipal villa, where the Saint Hippolytus Palio takes place: a historical-sporting re-enactment brought to life by the Knights and Archers group. This group carries on the ancient Vetralla chivalric traditions, also linked to the 'Sposalizio dell'Albero' (Marriage of the Tree), the famous ceremony that renews the possession of Mount Fogliano every May 8th. Period costumes, skill trials, and challenges between districts transport the audience back in time, in a territory crossed by the Via Francigena and rich in medieval memories like the ancient Roman station of Foro Cassio.

Tombola, band, and fireworks

Like any self-respecting patronal feast, Saint Hippolytus means a packed square for the traditional tombola, an evening concert by the town band, and, to close the festivities, a fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the village rooftops. During the festival days, various cultural, sporting, and gastronomic events organized by local associations also take place.

In the heart of the Vetralla Summer

The patronal feast is part of the broader 'Estate Vetrallese' program, promoted by the Municipality of Vetralla together with the Pro Loco and local associations: a schedule that in past editions has extended throughout most of August with open-air cinema screenings, sports tournaments at the municipal villa, theatrical performances, and concerts in the squares. A particularly evocative appointment is the 'Night of Saint Lawrence' on August 10th, when the historic center is illuminated by stars and candles in a magical atmosphere that anticipates the patronal days.
