A summer carnival in the heart of Tuscia

Few Italian towns celebrate Carnival in the middle of summer, but Bassano Romano is one of them. Every year, on the eve of Ferragosto, this small village in the province of Viterbo flips the calendar, bringing allegorical floats, masks, and confetti onto the streets under the warm August sky. The Bassano Romano Summer Carnival has become one of the most anticipated and unique events in the entire Viterbo Tuscia area, attracting visitors from all the surrounding municipalities.

The allegorical float parade

The heart of the event is the evening parade that winds through the village streets. The allegorical floats are crafted entirely on-site by the master float-makers of Bassano Romano, using traditional methods without relying on industrial materials—a choice that makes every edition a small masterpiece of popular craftsmanship. Alongside the floats, masked groups, costumed performers, Brazilian dancers, marching bands, stilt walkers, and jugglers create a colorful and engaging procession that brings every corner of the village to life.

The open-air disco at Parco Cenciarini

Once the parade concludes, the party moves to the Mario Cenciarini Public Park, which turns into a large open-air disco starting at 11:00 PM, featuring DJs, special effects, and entertainment. This is the moment when tradition gives way to the summer night: music, lights, and dancing continue until late, providing one of the most vibrant evenings of the Bassano Ferragosto.

A tradition born in the post-war era

The roots of the Bassano Romano Carnival date back to the immediate post-war period, thanks to the initiative of Mario Fravolini, affectionately remembered as "Sor Mario," the tireless driving force behind the festivals of those years. The first floats, such as the Primavera (Spring), the Orange that opened into segments, and the unforgettable Gondola, left a lasting mark on the village's imagination. Over time, the community added the summer edition to the winter one, curated with the same passion by the Associazione Carnevale Bassano Romano.

Bassano Romano and the Municipality

The village of Bassano Romano, nestled among the woods of northern Lazio and famous for the monumental Palazzo Giustiniani Odescalchi, provides the ideal setting for a festival that combines local identity with hospitality. The event, supported by the Municipality of Bassano Romano and managed by the Associazione Carnevale Bassano Romano, is free to attend and designed for audiences of all ages, from families to young people. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the Viterbo Tuscia region during one of its most festive evenings.
