The patron saint's festival in the historic center of Castel Frentano
The Patronal Feast of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr is the most anticipated event of the year for Castel Frentano, a town in the province of Chieti, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo hills between the Sangro and Aventino valleys. Every August 3rd, the village pays homage to its patron saint with a day that weaves together liturgy, music, and tradition, involving the entire community and the many locals who return for the occasion.
The heart of the festival is the Church of Santo Stefano, the town's mother church, rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century in neoclassical style over an older structure and embellished with stuccoes by Vincenzo Ciampoli. During the festival evenings, the Church of the Monte dei Morti and the private chapel of the A.R. Caporali nursery school remain open to the public, while the imposing brick bell tower, with its ancient sundial, becomes the visual symbol of the event.
Alongside religious celebrations, the festival offers a rich secular program organized in collaboration with local historic center associations. The village streets host art exhibitions curated by international artists, while the squares welcome concerts and social gatherings. Over the years, the festival has featured the historic participation of the Alexian Group led by Professor Santino Spinelli, an ambassador of Romani culture and music in Italy and Europe, who has performed highly acclaimed concerts in the heart of Castel Frentano.
The most awaited moment arrives around midnight, when fireworks are launched from the bell tower of the Church of Santo Stefano, illuminating the village sky and offering a spectacular pyrotechnic display that brings the day's festivities to a beautiful close.
The Feast of Saint Stephen is also the perfect opportunity to discover Castel Frentano, a village inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by Neolithic findings and an Italic necropolis. Located just a few kilometers from Lanciano and the Trabocchi Coast, the town boasts a compact and panoramic historic center overlooking the hills of the Frentano hinterland. Participating in the patronal feast means experiencing an authentic tradition, amidst popular faith, Abruzzo cuisine, and local hospitality.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr in Castel Frentano is scheduled for Monday, August 3, 2026, the day of the patron saint. The event will confirm the well-established blend of liturgical celebrations in the Church of Santo Stefano, evening openings of the village's historic churches, and cultural appointments in the streets of the historic center.
The complete program for the 2026 edition, featuring concerts, art exhibitions, and the pyrotechnic show from the bell tower, will be announced by the parish and local associations closer to the event.
Castel Frentano can be reached by car via the Lanciano exit of the A14 motorway (about 10 minutes from the toll booth). The nearest train station is in Lanciano; the reference airport is Pescara Abruzzo.
The festival takes place on August 3rd, the day of the patron saint, with events spread throughout the historic center in the preceding evenings.
Celebrations, concerts, and fireworks are free and open to everyone.
