The ancient heart of Eboli transforms into Bethlehem with living tableaus, artisan workshops, and a traditional tavern

During the last days of December, the historic center of Eboli, a town in the province of Salerno in Campania, changes its appearance to become a small Bethlehem. The Living Nativity in the Historic Center is promoted by the Santa Maria del Carmine Parish together with the San Francesco ANSPI Oratory, with the patronage of the Municipality of Eboli: for two evenings, the alleys, arches, and squares of the city's oldest district welcome dozens of volunteer actors who bring the representation of the birth of Jesus to life. The route winds through Piazza San Francesco, Piazza Porta Dogana, Piazza Attrizzi, and Via Antonio Giudice, with the church of San Francesco serving as the starting point.
The evenings typically begin around 7:30 PM with the procession of characters, which departs from the church of San Francesco and traverses the historic center. From there, a scenic representation unfolds, structured into tableaus: the Annunciation, the journey to Bethlehem, the Nativity, and the arrival of the Magi. In past editions, the theatrical aspect was curated by the Teatro del Bianconiglio company alongside the Palcoscenico Ebolitano, while musical moments alternated along the route, from the Piccolo Coro degli Angeli to traditional Christmas music performed in the streets and squares of the village.
The nativity scene is not just a sequence of scenes: it is a reconstructed village with its own daily activities. Those who walk through it will encounter:
A central role is played by the tavern, set up and managed by volunteers from the San Francesco community: here, visitors can sample typical local dishes, carefully prepared by parish families. It is the point where the religious representation intertwines with conviviality, and where the public lingers the longest between one tableau and the next. In some editions, the event has been designed as a totally plastic-free experience, a choice championed by the organizers as part of the oratory's educational project.
The Eboli Living Nativity is born from the collective effort of a community: the parish and the oratory are joined by theater companies, local cultural and archaeological groups, WebRadio Francesco, and ordinary citizens who lend their faces, costumes, and time. Don Salvatore Mancino, pastor of Santa Maria del Carmine, has often presented the initiative as a simple and participatory opportunity to experience the true meaning of Christmas together. This is also why the event has taken on the character of a city-wide festival over the years, capable of attracting visitors from the neighboring towns of the Piana del Sele.
Eboli is located between the Piana del Sele and the first slopes of the Picentini Mountains, a short distance from Salerno and the archaeological area of Paestum. Its historic core, made of stairways, portals, and open spaces overlooking the plain, offers a natural backdrop for this type of representation: no added structures are needed, as the stones and lights are enough to recreate the idea of an ancient village. In Campania, the nativity scene — in both its artisanal and living forms — is one of the most deeply rooted expressions of popular culture, and the Eboli version fits into this tradition with its own unique identity, defined by parish volunteer work and the reclamation of the historic center.
The event traditionally takes place in the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve, starting in the early evening. As it is an outdoor route in the historic center, it is advisable to arrive with comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the cold of late December, and to allow for longer travel times on evenings with higher attendance.
The 2026 edition of the Living Nativity in the Historic Center of Eboli has not yet been officially announced: at the time of verification, no dates or programs have been published by the Santa Maria del Carmine Parish, the San Francesco ANSPI Oratory, or the Municipality of Eboli.
Previous editions took place in the ancient center of the city, in the province of Salerno, in the days following Christmas, with opening in the early evening and a procession of characters departing from the church of San Francesco. Those wishing to plan their visit can follow the channels of the parish and the oratory, which publish the flyer with times and route once the organization is finalized.
In the historic center of Eboli (SA): Piazza San Francesco, Piazza Porta Dogana, Piazza Attrizzi, Via Antonio Giudice, and the surrounding narrow streets. The route is entirely pedestrian and winds along sloping roads and stairways.
By car: Take the Eboli exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then follow signs for the center; on the evenings of the event, the historic center is closed to traffic, so it is best to park in the lower part of the city. In the 2019 edition, a free shuttle service was activated starting at 5:00 PM, departing from Piazza Tito Flavio Silvano.
By train: Eboli station, on the Salerno–Battipaglia–Potenza line.
Opening in the early evening, around 7:00 PM; the procession of characters usually departs at 7:30 PM from the church of San Francesco.
