About Liri Carnival

Every February, the Liri Historical Carnival transforms the center of Sora, in the province of Frosinone, into an open-air theater. Papier-mâché floats, flag-wavers, dance schools, street performers, and the iconic Cenciarella mask bring Corso Volsci and the city's squares to life. Recognized as a Historical Carnival, the event celebrated its 30th edition in 2026 with a record 30,000 visitors, cementing its status as one of the most beloved folk festivals in the Lazio region.

Sora, city of the Historical Carnival

Every year, between February and Shrove Tuesday, the city of Sora, nestled on the banks of the Liri River in the province of Frosinone, dresses up in confetti and papier-mâché for the Liri Historical Carnival. The event, organized by the Permanent Committee of the Liri Carnival in collaboration with the Municipality of Sora, is one of the most deeply rooted folk festivals in the Ciociaria area and the entire Lazio region. In 2026, it reached the milestone of its 30th edition, though local records document float parades dating back to the 1930s, with continuous evidence starting from 1955.

A recognition that honors history

The Sora Carnival has been officially recognized as a Historical Carnival, a title that places it among Italy's great carnival events alongside names like Venice, Viareggio, Ivrea, Putignano, and Cento. This achievement was built edition after edition thanks to the work of papier-mâché masters, local schools, and cultural associations, and is certified by the numbers: from 20,000 visitors in 2025 to 30,000 in 2026, an all-time record for the event.

Cenciarella, the mask of Sora

The beating heart of the festival is Cenciarella, the symbolic mask of the Sora carnival, who, together with the Cenciareglie, embodies the popular and self-deprecating spirit of local tradition. She leads the Grand Parade, accompanied by flag-wavers, folk groups, and marching bands, in a procession that travels up Via Napoli and winds through the city streets to Corso de' Volsci.

What to see at the Liri Carnival

  • The Grand Parade of allegorical floats on Shrove Tuesday: in 2026, ten papier-mâché floats inspired by themes such as The Simpsons, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the circus world paraded through the streets.
  • Performances by dance schools and local school institutes in Piazza Santa Restituta.
  • Puppet theater and shows for children, making the carnival a family-friendly festival.
  • Street performers and street bands, from the Sbandieratori di Cori to traveling musical groups.
  • Street food on Lungoliri Mazzini, featuring sweet and savory specialties of the carnival season.

A community celebration

More than just a show, the Liri Historical Carnival is a collective work of art: behind every float lie months of work by neighborhood committees and papier-mâché masters, while schools, families, and associations march together in a procession involving hundreds of participants. It is this participatory dimension, strongly supported by the municipal administration, that has transformed Sora into the "city of the Historical Carnival" and draws visitors every year from across the province of Frosinone and southern Lazio.

Sora and the Liri Valley

The carnival is also an opportunity to discover Sora, a town of art crossed by the Liri River, with its historic center, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the landscapes of the middle Liri Valley, the gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. During the festival days, the city center becomes pedestrianized and convivial: the best way to experience the authentic soul of the Ciociaria.

Liri Carnival — edition 2026

The 30th edition of the Liri Historical Carnival took place in Sora on Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with a record 30,000 visitors. Two days of celebration between Piazza Santa Restituta, Corso Volsci, and Lungoliri Mazzini, culminating in the Shrove Tuesday Grand Parade with ten allegorical floats, the Sbandieratori di Cori, and the Cenciarella mask.

The 30th edition: a historic record

The 2026 edition marked a double milestone for the Liri Historical Carnival: the 30th official edition and a record turnout of 30,000 visitors, a significant increase compared to the 20,000 of the previous year. A success that established Sora among the Italian capitals of carnival, bolstered by its recognition as a Historical Carnival.

Sunday, February 15 — celebration in the square

The first day opened in Piazza Santa Restituta at 11:00 AM with two puppet theater shows. From 2:30 PM, the stage was taken over by local dance schools — Scuola Paritaria Beata Maria De Mattias, Starlight Dance, Danza Più, Hip Hop Accademy, Asd SG Dance, and Asd Centro Danza — while around 5:00 PM, street performers and the Blaze Dolls arrived.

Tuesday, February 17 — the Grand Parade

On Shrove Tuesday, at 3:00 PM, the Grand Carnival Parade started from Via Napoli, led by the Sbandieratori di Cori and Cenciarella, the symbolic mask of the Sora carnival, followed by local schools and ten allegorical floats: "The Simpsons," "Affari Tuoi," "Lilo & Stitch," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Dream, Clown, Dream," "Caribbean Float," "The Circus," "Carnival Sins," "That circus that is life," and "Toy Story."

Street food on the Lungoliri

Throughout the event, Lungoliri Mazzini hosted the "Tutti i capricci di Carnevale" street food area, featuring typical delicacies of the season.
