Honoring the Resistance across Orio, Barone, and Montalenghe
The Liberation Day Anniversary in Barone Canavese is the primary public event for this small town in the Province of Turin, located in the heart of the Piedmontese Canavese region. Each year, around April 25th, Barone Canavese renews its commitment to preserving the memory of the Resistance in collaboration with the neighboring towns of Orio Canavese and Montalenghe: three communities united in a traveling program that rotates between symbolic sites and engages the entire territory.
The event traditionally opens with an evening theatrical performance at the Salone Pluriuso in Barone Canavese, on Via Torino, produced in partnership with the Farfalibro Association of Orio Canavese and the ANPI Staffetta Partigiana section of Caluso. On the day of the festival, the program continues with a gathering in the square, a memorial mass for the fallen, and a procession accompanied by a marching band, which winds through the town streets for the laying of laurel wreaths at monuments dedicated to the partisans and those who died for freedom.
An integral part of the celebrations is the exhibition dedicated to the Resistance, set up around April 25th at the Town Hall and accompanied by a reception. The day concludes with a convivial lunch organized by the local Alpini Group and the municipal administration, serving as a moment for citizens to meet and strengthen the bonds between the three towns.
The Canavese region was one of the most active areas of the Piedmontese Resistance: its valleys, hills, and small towns like Barone, Orio, and Montalenghe were the stage for partisan actions between 1943 and 1945. Celebrating April 25th here means keeping the memory of those events alive and passing on the values of freedom and democracy to new generations. For this reason, local primary and nursery schools are key participants in the day, alongside the ANPI, the Alpini, and the Pro Loco.
Despite its intimate scale, the Liberation Day Anniversary in Barone Canavese represents the most deeply felt civic moment of the year for the town and its partner municipalities, bringing together associations, institutions, and families under the Italian tricolor flag. The free nature of the initiatives and the collaboration between three Piedmontese administrations make it a model of shared and participatory remembrance.
The 2026 edition, the 81st Liberation Day Anniversary, took place on April 24th and 25th with a shared program between the municipalities of Orio Canavese, Barone Canavese, and Montalenghe.
Local primary and nursery school children were also key participants in the day.
Barone Canavese is located in the Province of Turin, in the Canavese area. By car, it can be reached via the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway, taking the Ivrea exit and continuing towards Orio Canavese and Montalenghe. The reference railway station is Ivrea, on the Turin-Aosta line, from which you can continue via local bus connections.
Civic celebrations (procession, Mass, exhibition) are free and open to all. For the convivial lunch, reservations are required through the contact details provided by the organizers for each edition. It is recommended to check the updated program on the official channels of the municipalities of Barone Canavese, Orio Canavese, and Montalenghe.
