Float parades and the Sfincia Festival in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Lercara Carnival is the most cherished winter festival in Lercara Friddi, a town in the Sicilian hinterland nestled in the Sicani Mountains, within the Metropolitan City of Palermo. For a few days, the town center transforms into a large open-air stage featuring allegorical floats, masked groups, bands, and dancers amidst confetti, streamers, and music. It is an authentic Carnival, built from the ground up by local associations and groups—far from the major tourist crowds but rich in warmth and community spirit.
The heart of the event is the allegorical float parade: animated papier-mâché structures, often featuring satirical or current-event themes, which travel through the main streets accompanied by costumed groups. Each year, a theme guides the costumes and prize competitions; the 2025 edition, the 41st, centered on «The Funniest Mask», complete with an official call for participation issued by the Municipality. Alongside the floats, individual and group masks parade, while masked balls for both adults and children are held in squares and local venues.
The Lercara Friddi Carnival is traditionally accompanied by the Sfincia Festival, dedicated to the town's signature pastry: a delicious, fragrant fried treat filled with peeled and crushed almonds, enjoyed along the streets of the center during the festivities. It is the perfect opportunity to discover local confectionery and the typically Sicilian bond between popular celebrations and traditional cuisine.
Founded in 1595, Lercara Friddi owes its history to the sulfur mines, exploited from 1828 to 1969, which made it an important mining hub on the island; today, that past is recounted by the museum dedicated to industrial archaeology and the Sican archaeological site of Colle Madore. The town is also famous as the ancestral home of the Frank Sinatra family, to whom a museum is dedicated. Experiencing the Carnival here means combining the festivities with a territory of strong identity in the lesser-known hinterland of the province of Palermo.
The 2026 Lercara Carnival is expected to feature, as every year, the allegorical float parade through the streets of Lercara Friddi, masked groups, dances, and the Sfincia Festival. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the calendar and detailed program are usually published shortly before the event on the channels of the Pro Loco Lercara Friddi and the Municipality. It is recommended to check for updates before traveling.
