Andria's journey through justice, memory, and citizenship
The Legality Festival is one of the most deeply felt civic events in Andria, a city in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT), in Puglia. Promoted by the municipal administration, the festival transforms the entire city for several weeks into a widespread laboratory of citizenship, where the theme of justice intertwines with historical memory, labor, rights, and the commitment of the new generations.
The strength of the festival lies in the network of subjects that bring it to life: schools of all levels, local associations, third-sector organizations, entrepreneurs, parishes, and the Diocese work together with the municipal administration. The result is a rich and structured calendar, designed primarily to involve students, who are called upon to become active protagonists through competitions, dramatizations, and field experiences.
The program alternates between musical readings, plays, book presentations, concerts, and meetings with direct witnesses. Among the symbolic places of the event are the Episcopal Seminary, school auditoriums, and the squares of the city center. Each appointment addresses a different aspect of civic life: the memory of mafia victims, gender equality, the value of work, the fight against bullying, and democratic participation.
The Legality Festival is not just a cultural review: it is a civic commitment that the community of Andria renews every year. Commemorations of victims of organized crime and the promotion of positive role models are accompanied by proposals aimed at young people, so that legality is experienced not as an abstract duty but as a daily choice. The event is free to attend and represents a defining identity appointment for this Apulian city.
The sixth edition of the Legality Festival in Andria was held from April 7 to May 4, 2026, with a series of previews that began on March 7. The official opening, at the Episcopal Seminary, featured the musical reading "Ma io ho deciso. Storia di Lia" with Alessio Cordaro, son of Lia Pipitone, a victim of organized crime.
Key events included: the play "Cercando Giustina" with Stefania De Toma, dedicated to Giustina Rocca, the first female jurist in history (April 15, Episcopal Seminary); the Job Day "Il lavoro viaggia con noi" in Piazza Catuma (April 16); the initiative "Il teatro che non c'è" with a concert by the ProgettOrchestra at the former Market on Via Barletta (April 21); and the closing concert "Voci di libertà " on May 4.
The previews included the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Porro sisters' massacre, book presentations, and various meetings in local schools, confirming the educational vocation of the event promoted by the Municipality of Andria.
Events take place in various locations around Andria (BT), in Puglia: the Episcopal Seminary, school auditoriums, city center squares, and other locations indicated in the official program.
Andria can be reached by car via the SS16 bis and the A14 motorway (Andria-Barletta exit). The city is served by the Ferrovie del Gargano and Ferrotramviaria railway networks; the nearest airport is Bari-Palese, about an hour away.
Most events are free of charge. For information: Municipality of Andria, tel. +39 0883 290111.
