Shoulder-borne obelisks and neighborhood festivities in the hamlet of Marigliano
In Lausdomini, a hamlet of the municipality of Marigliano in the province of Naples, the Gigli Festival is much more than just an anniversary: it is the moment when an entire neighborhood comes together, organizes itself, and takes to the streets. Every year, local committees raise wooden and papier-mรขchรฉ obelisks and make them "dance" on their shoulders along the hamlet's streets, supported by dozens of carriers following the band's rhythm. It is the same tradition that made the Nola area famous, experienced here on a neighborhood scale, with participation involving families, artisans, and young people from the area.
Compared to the large historical events in Campania, the Lausdomini festival is young, and for this very reason, it perfectly illustrates how a tradition can emerge from the grassroots. The Vespucci Committee, named after Via Amerigo Vespucci, brought the first giglio (lily) to the streets on May 5, 2013: a twenty-one-meter obelisk raised along Via Caliendo, in an area that had never hosted folkloric celebrations before. Since that debut, the event has grown and structured itself around multiple groups: alongside the historic Vespucci, the Lausdomini in Festa Committee and the Amicizia Committee now operate, each with its own giglio and paranza.
First-time visitors will discover that the dance is just the tip of an iceberg representing months of work. The ingredients are always the same:
The 2026 Vespucci Committee was officially presented on January 18, 2026, with Carmine Cerciello as the Giglio godfather and Gabriele Cervone as honorary president. The artistic staff brought together the Greco's Band, singers Eduardo Ammirabile and Pietro Fiordellisi, and the audio service by the Santella brothers. The final day was Sunday, May 24, 2026, when three gigli danced through the streets of the hamlet, with the support of the Municipality of Marigliano, the Local Police, and the Carabinieri.
One of the choices that has characterized the festival is its openness to those who are not necessarily giglio enthusiasts. In the days leading up to the dance, the hamlet hosts paranza dinners, food festivals, children's entertainment, folk music shows, and public musical rehearsals. 2026 added an event that has now become a small tradition: the "A needle, a thread, a story" fashion show, scheduled for Thursday, May 21 at 9 PM at Via Vincenzo Caliendo 145, dedicated to local artisan tailoring and curated by seamstresses Maria Assunta Riccio and Maria Riccio. Already in 2025, the Lausdomini catwalk had hosted outfits created by students from the "A. Leone - U. Nobile" Institute of Nola.
The hamlet is located just over a kilometer from the center of Marigliano, in that densely populated area of towns โ Nola, Brusciano, Saviano, Mariglianella โ where the shoulder-borne machine is a shared language. The Gigli of Nola tradition is part of the UNESCO-recognized Network of Great Shoulder-borne Machines, inscribed in 2013 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: a recognition that helps explain why, in this corner of Campania, lifting an obelisk is not just postcard folklore but a living ritual of identity.
The dance is a street event: you experience it standing up, often in the middle of the crowd. It is advisable to arrive early, leave your car far from the route, and follow the instructions of the paranza leaders. Those who really want to understand the festival should be there both in the morning and in the evening: two different atmospheres, the first more technical, the second more emotional, with the lights turned on the obelisk.
After the 2025 edition was moved to September, the festival returned in 2026 to its traditional late May slot. The final dance took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, with three gigli carried on shoulders along the streets of Lausdomini, a hamlet of the Municipality of Marigliano.
The organizing team was presented on January 18, 2026: Carmine Cerciello as Giglio godfather and Gabriele Cervone as honorary president. On the artistic front, the Greco's Band with singers Eduardo Ammirabile and Pietro Fiordellisi, and the technical audio support of the Santella brothers. The construction of the obelisk was entrusted to the artisan workshop of Antonio Toppi, known as "Pracetella", a guarantee of fidelity to the construction tradition. Alongside the Vespucci, the hamlet was also animated by the Lausdomini in Festa Committee, with the Orgoglio Bruscianese paranza, and the Amicizia Committee.
The program did not end on the day of the dance. On Thursday, May 21 at 9 PM, at Via Vincenzo Caliendo 145, the "A needle, a thread, a story" fashion show took place, dedicated to local artisan tailoring and curated by seamstresses Maria Assunta Riccio and Maria Riccio: handmade garments and traditional crafts brought to the catwalk as an integral part of the festival's spirit. In the days leading up to the dance, the hamlet also hosted the usual neighborhood moments, including structure preparation, neighborhood initiatives, and musical events.
The event relied on the support of the Marigliano municipal administration, the mayor, the Local Police, and the Carabinieri for traffic management and safety during the turns.
Lausdomini is a hamlet of Marigliano (NA), just over a kilometer from the town center. By train, get off at the Marigliano station on the EAV Circumvesuviana Naples - Nola - Baiano line, then continue with a short taxi ride or on foot. By car, you can arrive via the road network connecting Nola, Brusciano, and Marigliano; during the days of the dance, traffic closures and diversions are possible in the area affected by the route.
The dance is traditionally divided into two moments, morning and evening, along Via Caliendo, Via Vespucci, Via Montesanto, and Via Cappella. Access is free: no tickets are required.
Updates on dates and programs are published on the social media channels of the organizing committees, particularly on the Comitato Giglio Vespucci Facebook page.
