About Bread Festival

In Lariano, nestled at the foot of the Lepini Mountains in the heart of the Castelli Romani, the Bread Festival celebrates the product that best defines the town's identity: wood-fired bread with its signature dark crust and dense crumb. For three days, the main square comes alive with food stalls, tastings, live cooking demonstrations, music, and meetings with master bakers, blending rural traditions, grain culture, and community spirit.

Bread as a symbol of the territory

Some products are worth more than a postcard. In Lariano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, that product is bread. A large loaf with a thick, burnished crust and a dense, fragrant crumb that stays fresh for days—a staple baked for generations in the town's wood-fired ovens. The Lariano Bread Festival was created to showcase this Castelli Romani excellence and bring it to the heart of village life, becoming a highly anticipated mid-June event.

What is Lariano Bread?

Its fame has long crossed municipal borders: in the markets of Rome and Lazio, Lariano bread is a recognized benchmark. The recipe is simple yet demanding: whole wheat or semi-whole wheat flour, sourdough starter, long rising times, and above all, baking in a wood-fired oven, which gives it that characteristic dark crust and the aroma that fills the streets from the early hours of the morning. It is a bread designed to last, born from a peasant culture where nothing was wasted and a single loaf accompanied the entire week.

How the festival works

The heart of the event is Piazza Sant'Eurosia, which transforms into a large open-air celebration for three days. Surrounding the food and exhibition stalls, you will find:

  • tastings of freshly baked bread, paired with local cured meats and cheeses;
  • the classic bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil from the Castelli, simple and irresistible;
  • live cooking and bread-making demonstrations with local bakers;
  • musical performances and evening entertainment;
  • activities dedicated to children and families, including readings, workshops, and educational activities about grain and flour.

There is also room for reflection: in recent editions, the festival has hosted conferences on sustainable agriculture and the protection of designations of origin for the cereal supply chains of the Castelli Romani, a sign of an event that goes beyond mere celebration to promote the product.

A community celebration

What strikes visitors to Lariano is the town's involvement. The festival is promoted by the Municipal Administration alongside local associations, with the support of the Lazio Region and ARSIAL, the regional agency for agricultural development and innovation. The local master bakers are the true stars, and in more than one edition, the community has publicly honored the oldest baker, a gesture that speaks volumes about the bond between the town and its bread.

When to go and what to expect

The event takes place in June, over a long weekend from Friday to Sunday. The evenings are the most vibrant part: the stalls open in the late afternoon as the heat subsides, and the square remains lively until late with music, conversation, and tastings. It is a family-friendly festival where you can stroll at a leisurely pace and eat well on a budget.

Lariano and the Castelli Romani

Lariano is located just over forty kilometers from Rome, in an elevated position between the Alban Hills and the Lepini Mountains, a stone's throw from Velletri and Artena. It is a land of chestnut forests, porcini mushrooms—celebrated by another historic town festival—and vineyards. A visit to the Bread Festival is easily combined with a tour of the nearby villages, exploring wineries, panoramic views over the Pontine plain, and the many popular festivals that animate the Castelli Romani during the warmer months.

Bread Festival — edition 2026

The third edition of the Lariano Bread Festival took place from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Piazza Sant'Eurosia. Three days dedicated to tradition, taste, and conviviality, featuring food and exhibition stalls, tastings of bread and local Castelli Romani products, live cooking, performances, and in-depth discussions on the grain supply chain.

Third edition: bread at the heart of the town

From June 19 to 21, 2026, Lariano hosted the third edition of its Bread Festival, with Piazza Sant'Eurosia transformed into the beating heart of the event. Around the stalls, there were alternating tastings, local products, live cooking, and entertainment designed to engage citizens and visitors from neighboring areas.

Tradition and future of the supply chain

Alongside the gastronomic aspect, the program included conferences on sustainable agriculture and the protection of designations of origin for the cereal supply chains of the Castelli Romani. The event was attended by the President of the Lazio Regional Council, Antonello Aurigemma, who emphasized how Lariano bread represents «the value of daily work, the care of gestures and knowledge handed down over time», an identity product capable of linking community, territory, and tourism.

Lariano bread

Baking in a wood-fired oven and the use of whole or semi-whole wheat flour give this bread the typical dark crust and dense crumb that have made it famous far beyond the municipal borders. It was the absolute star of the festival, served in tastings along with local cured meats and olive oil.
